Jack Grootkerk‘s memoir describes the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, his escape <strong>to</strong><br />

France via Belgium, his unsuccessful attempt <strong>to</strong> enter Switzerland, entering Spain and his<br />

internment in a prison, his journey <strong>to</strong> Great Britain via Gibraltar, his wife‘s escape from<br />

the Netherlands <strong>to</strong> Switzerland, his service in the Princess Irene Brigade of the Dutch<br />

Free Forces, his reunion with his wife in France, and his return <strong>to</strong> Holland.<br />

RG-04.018 --- Confession and Letter of Mauthausen Commandant<br />

This collection contains a copy in <strong>English</strong> of a confession made by Franz Ziereis, the<br />

commandant of Mauthausen concentration camp (identified in the documents as ―Franz‖)<br />

after his arrest by American <strong>for</strong>ces in May 1945. In the confession, the commandant<br />

describes conditions in Mauthausen and other camps as well as the various methods of<br />

<strong>to</strong>rture and execution practiced by the Nazis. Ziereis also gives detailed in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

about the activities of his fellow commanders and physicians employed in the camps.<br />

Also included are two poems in German concerning suffering in the camps and a letter<br />

from Ziereis <strong>to</strong> his wife.<br />

Provenance: The memoir was found with a group of papers that lack donor and/or<br />

provenance in<strong>for</strong>mation, but were given <strong>to</strong> the USHMC early in its his<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

Accession 2000.355 --- The Abraham Slowes Collection<br />

This collection contains pho<strong>to</strong>copies of correspondence relating <strong>to</strong> Abraham Slowes‘<br />

ef<strong>for</strong>ts <strong>to</strong> save his parents, Moshe Dow and Malka Slowes, as well as other members of<br />

his family, by bringing them out of Nazi-occupied Vilna. The originals are housed at the<br />

Beit Lohamei HaGhetaot (Ghet<strong>to</strong> Fighters‘ House), Israel. Also included is a pho<strong>to</strong>copy<br />

of the Slowes and Weil family his<strong>to</strong>ry, which was created by Mrs. Simone Weil Slowes.<br />
