―The Three Lives of Gizel Berman‖ describes Berman‘s childhood in Uzhgorod and<br />

Sobrance (then both in Czechoslovakia), her schooling in Brussels, Belgium, the<br />

imprisonment and <strong>to</strong>rture of her boyfriend, Nick, her reunion with Nick and their<br />

marriage, their deportation <strong>to</strong> Auschwitz, her transfer <strong>to</strong> and life in Stutthof, where she<br />

was separated from her husband, her liberation and return <strong>to</strong> Uzhgorod, her reunion with<br />

her husband, their emigration and assimilation in<strong>to</strong> American culture, and their<br />

daughter‘s experiences with antisemitism.<br />

the Brody ghet<strong>to</strong>. It also deals with his separation from his wife, Sophie, his deportation<br />

<strong>to</strong> a concentration camp, his escape, his reunion with his wife and their experiences<br />

hiding in a <strong>for</strong>est, their liberation by the Soviet military and eventual escape <strong>to</strong> the<br />

American Zone of Occupation in Germany, the displaced persons camp at Föhrenwald,<br />

Germany, and their immigration <strong>to</strong> the United States.<br />
