This collection contains a variety of materials concerning Jewish life in central and<br />

eastern Europe be<strong>for</strong>e the <strong>Holocaust</strong>, the suffering of Jews throughout his<strong>to</strong>ry, and<br />

atrocities <strong>to</strong>ward Jews in the Soviet Union and Poland. Also included is the November<br />

1928 report of the Constituent Convention of the Federation of American Jews of<br />

Lithuanian Descent.<br />

Biographical/his<strong>to</strong>rical note: Henry Lasker was born in Lithuania on July 15, 1878. He<br />

immigrated <strong>to</strong> the United States in 1886. He became the first Jewish lawyer in<br />

Springfield, Massachusetts, and was seriously involved in city politics and Jewish affairs.<br />

This collection contains copies of letters and legal documents relating <strong>to</strong> the attempts of<br />

Judge Jess Nathan <strong>to</strong> win the extension of the statute of limitations against Nazi war<br />

criminals in March 1965. Also included is in<strong>for</strong>mation concerning the ef<strong>for</strong>ts of Christian<br />

religious leaders in Southern Cali<strong>for</strong>nia <strong>to</strong> have the statute of limitations changed.<br />

Provenance: Judge Jess Nathan collected the letters and other documents during 1964 and<br />

1965 while serving as chairman of the National Committee Against Nazi Criminals and<br />

Nazism in America. The copies were donated <strong>to</strong> the Museum in 1986.<br />
