This collection contains the office files of Hans Bachmann, personal secretary <strong>to</strong> Carl J.<br />
Burckhardt. The files contain in<strong>for</strong>mation about assistance <strong>to</strong> Jews in various countries,<br />
and <strong>to</strong> civilian detainees in concentration camps in Germany from 1939 <strong>to</strong> 1945;<br />
administrative records of the Department of Special Assistance (DAS) relating <strong>to</strong> actions<br />
in favor of Jews; records relating <strong>to</strong> material and morale assistance from the ICRC <strong>to</strong><br />
European Jews; general records <strong>for</strong> ghet<strong>to</strong>s, the internment of Jews, and concentration<br />
camps <strong>for</strong> Jews; ICRC appeals <strong>to</strong> various governments requesting respect <strong>for</strong> the Geneva<br />
Convention and the rules of war; appeals from governments, NGOs, individuals, and<br />
national Red Cross organizations <strong>for</strong> intervention by the ICRC in cases of violations of<br />
laws and conventions; the emigration of Jews <strong>to</strong> Palestine and elsewhere; ICRC relations<br />
with the League of Nations on the question of refugees in Europe, especially Jews fleeing<br />
persecution in Germany; ICRC work with Jewish and other organizations; deportations of<br />
Jews from European countries, including individual cases and testimonies about Nazi<br />
atrocities; proposals and projects <strong>to</strong> improve the conditions of Jews in Europe; inquiries<br />
and requests <strong>for</strong> assistance on behalf of Jews imprisoned or deported by Germany<br />
including negotiations between the ICRC and German authorities regarding racial<br />
persecution; ICRC visits <strong>to</strong> concentration camps, prisons, and ghet<strong>to</strong>s; an ICRC<br />
diplomatic mission <strong>to</strong> Iraq regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict from 1949 <strong>to</strong> 1950; and<br />
requests from individuals <strong>for</strong> assistance <strong>to</strong> persecuted Jews.<br />

Committee of the Jews in Poland, Department of Emigration)<br />
The CKZP was responsible <strong>for</strong> certifying the ―Jewish nationality‖ of persons wishing <strong>to</strong><br />
emigrate and assisting the Polish government in the issuance of passports and visas. The<br />
first twenty-two of the 645 files contain such administration materials as: announcements,<br />
minutes of meetings, reports, and correspondence. Remaining files consist of registration<br />
<strong>for</strong>ms and copies of documents issued by the Department <strong>for</strong> emigration purposes.
