This testimony describes Bernard Nissenbaum‘s deportation from France and his<br />

imprisonment in several concentration and labor camps. Included in the text are detailed<br />

descriptions of conditions in the Trzebinia camp, the status and treatment of wealthy Jews<br />

as compared <strong>to</strong> that of other inmates, the separation of various nationalities of prisoners<br />

in the Birkenau camp, the situation of the ―Muselmänner‖ in various camps, the<br />

relationships between Kapos and inmates, and conditions in the Warsaw ghet<strong>to</strong> prior <strong>to</strong><br />

the uprising.<br />

This collection contains two testimonies (one original and one pho<strong>to</strong>copy) by Isaac<br />

Frankel. Both testimonies are attached <strong>to</strong> letters that summarize Frankel‘s deportation,<br />

the loss of his family, his imprisonment in ghet<strong>to</strong>s and <strong>for</strong>ced labor camps, his survival of<br />

several selections and Buchenwald, and his life as a <strong>Holocaust</strong> survivor.<br />

RG-02.007 ―Shari: A True S<strong>to</strong>ry‖ by Shirley Lebovitz, 1946–1947<br />

This testimony describes the survival of Shirley Lebovitz and her daughter, Magda, and<br />

their return <strong>to</strong> a normal life after World War II. It includes in<strong>for</strong>mation about the<br />

treatment of Czechoslovakian Jews during the <strong>Holocaust</strong>, their deportation <strong>to</strong> ghet<strong>to</strong>s, the<br />

survival of Lebovitz and her daughter in Auschwitz and <strong>for</strong>ced labor camps, their<br />

reunions with relatives and friends after liberation, and their emigration <strong>to</strong> the United<br />

States.<br />

Provenance: Magda W. Willinger, Lebovitz‘s daughter, translated the text in<strong>to</strong> <strong>English</strong> in<br />

1981. Shirley Lebovitz is the source of acquisition.<br />
