Portugal, 1940‖
Joseph Shadur‘s memoir describes his childhood in prewar Berlin and Antwerp, Belgium;
his family‘s escape from Nazi-occupied Europe in their 1938 Oldsmobile, first to Bruges
(near Bordeaux), France, in May 1940 and then to Spain and Portugal in December 1940;
their voyage to the United States aboard the American Export Lines ―S.S. Exeter‖; their
life in St. Paul, Minnesota; Shadur‘s trip to France in March 1995 to revisit his former
home in Bruges as well as several boyhood friends; and his trip in March 1996 to the
Hendaye bridge on the French-Spanish border where he and his family crossed into Spain
in 1940.
