Portugal, 1940‖<br />

Joseph Shadur‘s memoir describes his childhood in prewar Berlin and Antwerp, Belgium;<br />

his family‘s escape from Nazi-occupied Europe in their 1938 Oldsmobile, first <strong>to</strong> Bruges<br />

(near Bordeaux), France, in May 1940 and then <strong>to</strong> Spain and Portugal in December 1940;<br />

their voyage <strong>to</strong> the United States aboard the American Export Lines ―S.S. Exeter‖; their<br />

life in St. Paul, Minnesota; Shadur‘s trip <strong>to</strong> France in March 1995 <strong>to</strong> revisit his <strong>for</strong>mer<br />

home in Bruges as well as several boyhood friends; and his trip in March 1996 <strong>to</strong> the<br />

Hendaye bridge on the French-Spanish border where he and his family crossed in<strong>to</strong> Spain<br />

in 1940.
