from France in 1942‖<br />

This collection contains a copy of ―An Unpublished Chapter in the His<strong>to</strong>ry of the<br />

Deportation of Foreign Jews from France in 1942,‖ written by Roswell McClelland in<br />

1942. ―An Unpublished Chapter . . .‖ is McClelland‘s personal account of the roundup of<br />

<strong>for</strong>eign Jews in France during 1941 and 1942 under the direction of the Germans.<br />

Included in the piece are descriptions of various French concentration camps, the<br />

treatment of Jewish children, the division of age groups <strong>for</strong> deportation <strong>to</strong> the East, and<br />

rescue ef<strong>for</strong>ts by the American Friends Service Committee.<br />

Provenance: ―An Unpublished Chapter . . .‖ was written in 1942 by Roswell McClelland,<br />

a delegate <strong>for</strong> the American Friends Service Committee in France during 1941 and 1942.<br />

An unknown source at the Washing<strong>to</strong>n Post gave the original <strong>to</strong> Hyman Bookbinder, who<br />

donated this copy <strong>to</strong> USHMM.<br />
