RG-04.018 Confession and Letter of Mauthausen Commandant, 1945<br />

This collection contains an <strong>English</strong>-language version of a confession made by Franz<br />

Ziereis, the commandant of Mauthausen concentration camp (identified in the documents<br />

as ―Franz‖) after his arrest by American <strong>for</strong>ces in May 1945. In the confession, the<br />

commandant describes conditions in Mauthausen and other camps as well as the various<br />

methods of <strong>to</strong>rture and execution practiced by the Nazis. Ziereis also gives detailed<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation about the activities of his fellow commanders and physicians employed in<br />

the camps. Also included are two poems in German concerning suffering in the camps<br />

and a letter from Ziereis <strong>to</strong> his wife.<br />

Provenance: The memoir was found with a group of papers that lack donor and/or<br />

provenance in<strong>for</strong>mation, but were given <strong>to</strong> the USHMC early in its his<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

RG-04.019 Das Krema<strong>to</strong>rium in Dachau, 1945<br />

―Das Krema<strong>to</strong>rium in Dachau‖ is an eyewitness report given by Willy Furlan-Horst, a<br />

film direc<strong>to</strong>r from Vienna and a ―protected prisoner‖ at Dachau, shortly after the<br />

liberation of Dachau. The report describes the interior of the crema<strong>to</strong>ria, the gas<br />

chambers, the procedures <strong>for</strong> <strong>to</strong>rture and execution of prisoners, the duties of the<br />

crema<strong>to</strong>ria Kommandos, and the facilities <strong>for</strong> housing the SS attack dogs. Also included<br />

are copies of four pho<strong>to</strong>graphs of death scenes in Dachau after liberation, and an <strong>English</strong><br />

translation prepared by the USHMM Archives.<br />
