RG-28.008 Stern Family Papers Relating <strong>to</strong> Restitution, Ca. 1945–Ca. 1980<br />

These papers relate <strong>to</strong> the fate of Ilse Stern Salinger, who was incarcerated in Westerbork<br />

and later perished at Auschwitz with her husband and child. Also included is in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

about the cooperative ef<strong>for</strong>ts of Mrs. Salinger‘s father, Robert Stern, and her mother-inlaw,<br />

Clara Alice Steinhaus, <strong>to</strong> obtain restitution from the West German government <strong>for</strong><br />

damages (e.g. loss of freedom, loss of property) <strong>to</strong> Ilse Salinger.<br />

Provenance: The papers in this collection were received or created by Robert Stern and<br />

were apparently passed down through the family <strong>to</strong> the donor, Eric Stern, the son of<br />

Robert Stern‘s brother.<br />

RG-28.009 Richard Straus Papers Relating <strong>to</strong> Restitution, 1945–1974<br />

This collection contains correspondence concerning Richard Straus‘ assistance <strong>to</strong><br />

relatives attempting <strong>to</strong> receive restitution from the German government <strong>for</strong> property lost<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e their emigration <strong>to</strong> the United States. Also included are term papers written by<br />

Straus while enrolled at George<strong>to</strong>wn University and several income tax <strong>for</strong>ms. Born in<br />

Germany, Straus entered the United States in June 1940 and became a naturalized citizen<br />

in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1944. He joined the United States Army in July 1944 and served in the Signal<br />

Corps of the 87th Infantry Division. He began work with the U.S. State Department in<br />

November 1948, serving in the office of German Public Affairs. From 1961 <strong>to</strong> 1963, he<br />

served as president of the board of the American International School in Vienna, Austria.<br />

Provenance: Alan G. Straus, Richard Straus‘ son, obtained the papers after his father‘s<br />

death in 1986. He donated the collection <strong>to</strong> USHMM in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1989.<br />

Organization, 1961–1970<br />

This collection contains copies of United Restitution Organization (URO) Rundschreiben<br />

from the Frankfurt am Main office; miscellaneous printed and mimeograph memoranda<br />

and statistical reports, some of which originated in the URO Berlin office; and a<br />

Baltimore Emergency Committee file entitled ―Witnesses—War Criminals.‖<br />

Provenance: Source of acquisition is the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, Baltimore<br />

Office.<br />
