This collection contains in<strong>for</strong>mation about Nadia Gould‘s life. It describes her parents‘<br />

families; her childhood in the French countryside; the German occupation of France; her<br />

escape with her mother <strong>to</strong> unoccupied France, where they joined her father; the family‘s<br />

escape from Marseille <strong>to</strong> Portugal via Spain; her emigration <strong>to</strong> the United States and<br />

reunion with her parents; her assimilation in<strong>to</strong> American culture and her activities while<br />

in high school and college; and some of her experiences afterward. Included are picture<br />

postcards illustrated with Gould‘s artwork, which depicts geometric and human <strong>for</strong>ms.<br />

This essay is composed of three parts. Included are the accounts of those who escaped<br />

from Europe, those who survived in Polish <strong>for</strong>ests, and one man who survived<br />

Auschwitz. The narratives include subjects such as emigrating <strong>to</strong> the United States,<br />

Kristallnacht, resistance movements and partisans, male rape, and the conditions inside<br />

concentration camps.<br />

This testimony contains Pauline Buchenholz‘s memoir, which describes her experiences<br />

after she was liberated. Included are descriptions of her stay in an American displaced<br />

persons camp in Deggendorf, Germany, and her immigration <strong>to</strong> the United States in June<br />

1946.<br />
