documents relating <strong>to</strong> the persecution and incarceration of Jews, especially at Gurs<br />

concentration camp in France. Also included is in<strong>for</strong>mation about emigration attempts by<br />

members of the Malz, Finkelstein, Rosenthal, Schwarz, and Rimalower families.<br />

These papers contains in<strong>for</strong>mation about the prewar discrimination of German Jewish<br />

physicians, anti-Jewish laws, the deportation of German Jews <strong>to</strong> Terezin (Theresienstadt),<br />

the fate of William Frank‘s relatives, and acknowledgement given <strong>to</strong> Jews <strong>for</strong> their help<br />

during a fire.<br />

RG-10.083 Be<strong>for</strong>e the <strong>Holocaust</strong>: Three Jewish Lives, 1870–1939<br />

These memoirs describe the experiences and lives of three German Jews: Käte<br />

Frankenthal, Max Moses Polke, and Joseph Benjamin Levy. Frankenthal‘s memoir<br />

describes the hardship of being a Jewish socialist. Polke‘s memoir discusses his life<br />

be<strong>for</strong>e the Nazis came <strong>to</strong> power, the effects of the Nuremberg Laws, and conditions in the<br />

Buchenwald concentration camp. Levy‘s memoir describes his<strong>to</strong>ric events such as the<br />

Nazi bookburning, the Jewish boycott, and Kristallnacht.<br />
