This collection contains various materials relating <strong>to</strong> the life and career of Gaynor I.<br />

Jacobson. Among the materials are letters concerning Jacobson‘s work in Hungary after<br />

World War II, magazine articles concerning refugees and emigration <strong>to</strong> Palestine,<br />

pho<strong>to</strong>graphs documenting Jacobson‘s career with HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid<br />

Society), and a biographical sketch of Jacobson.<br />

Biography: Gaynor I. Jacobson was born in Buffalo, New York, on May 17, 1912. He<br />

studied at the University of Buffalo. During his professional career, he held positions<br />

with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and was the direc<strong>to</strong>r of the<br />

European and North African operations <strong>for</strong> HIAS after the <strong>Holocaust</strong>.<br />

This collection contains letters, lists, several reports, and pho<strong>to</strong>graphs concerning<br />

William Perl‘s involvement in illegal emigration ef<strong>for</strong>ts during the <strong>Holocaust</strong>; and Nazi<br />

atrocities in the Soviet Union, including a report by the Soviet State Extraordinary<br />

Commission <strong>for</strong> Ascertaining and Investigating the Crimes Committed by the Germanfascist<br />

Invaders and Their Accomplices. The July 4, 1944, report includes in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

about the execution of Soviet citizens in rural areas, the execution of Soviet Jews, and<br />

Jewish population statistics <strong>for</strong> several Soviet cities as well as in<strong>for</strong>mation about episodes<br />

of clandestine Jewish emigration by sea <strong>to</strong> Palestine. Another report was issued by the<br />

Office of Strategic Services, Research Analysis Branch, on June 27, 1944. Included is<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation about specific crimes charged <strong>to</strong> the Germans, persons accused of being war<br />

criminals, and Russian attitudes <strong>to</strong>ward the legal problems involved in war crimes<br />

prosecution.<br />
