Biography: Richard Straus (b. December 28, 1925, Karlsruhe, Germany) entered the<br />

United States in June 1940 and became a naturalized citizen in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1944. He joined<br />

the United States Army in July 1944 and served in the Signal Corps of the 87th Infantry<br />

Division. He began work with the U.S. State Department in November 1948, serving in<br />

the office of German Public Affairs. From 1961 <strong>to</strong> 1963, he served as president of the<br />

board of the American International School in Vienna, Austria. He died on Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 4,<br />

1986.<br />

Provenance: Alan G. Straus, Richard Straus‘ son, obtained the papers after his father‘s<br />

death in 1986. He donated the collection <strong>to</strong> the United States <strong>Holocaust</strong> Memorial<br />

Museum Archives in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1989.<br />

RG-06.002.05 --- An Approach <strong>to</strong> the Preparation of the Prosecution Against Axis<br />

Criminality (Tel<strong>for</strong>d Taylor Memorandum)<br />

This memorandum contains Tel<strong>for</strong>d Taylor‘s description of the basic parts of a war<br />

crimes case, the expected accomplishments of the Office of the U.S. Chief of Counsel <strong>for</strong><br />

the Prosecution of Axis Criminality, an explanation of the ―illegal launching‖ of<br />

aggressive war acts, and descriptions of the various types of evidence <strong>to</strong> be sought during<br />

investigation.<br />

Provenance: Written in July 1945 by Col. Tel<strong>for</strong>d Taylor of the Office of the U.S. Chief<br />

of Counsel <strong>for</strong> the Prosecution of Axis Criminality. The original memo is found in the<br />

Murray C. Bernay Collection at the Library of the University of Wyoming.<br />

This collection contains copies of ten legal briefs compiled by the Office of the U.S.<br />

Chief of Counsel <strong>for</strong> War Crimes (OCCWC) from 1946–1947. The briefs contain a<br />

timeline of important dates in modern German his<strong>to</strong>ry, a glossary of German economic<br />

terms, a report on the ―Führerprinzip,‖ and a brief concerning the ―Aryanization‖ of<br />

Jewish property.
