These papers relate <strong>to</strong> the fate of Ilse Stern Salinger, who was incarcerated in Westerbork<br />

and who later perished at Auschwitz <strong>to</strong>gether with her husband and child. Also included<br />

is in<strong>for</strong>mation about the cooperative ef<strong>for</strong>ts of Mrs. Salinger‘s father, Robert Stern, and<br />

her mother-in-law, Clara Alice Steinhaus, <strong>to</strong> obtain restitution from the West German<br />

government <strong>for</strong> damages (e.g. loss of freedom, loss of property) <strong>to</strong> Ilse Salinger.<br />

Provenance: The papers in this collection were received or created by Robert Stern and<br />

apparently passed down through the family <strong>to</strong> the donor, who is the son of Robert Stern‘s<br />

brother.<br />

This collection contains pho<strong>to</strong>copies of clippings and other documents relating <strong>to</strong> the<br />

actions of Mary Barys Szul (b. 1928) who was recognized as a Righteous Among the<br />

Nations by Yad Vashem in 1982 (Case Number 3233).<br />

Biographical/his<strong>to</strong>rical note: Mania Birnberg was a survivor of the Zborow ghet<strong>to</strong>. She<br />

escaped <strong>to</strong> a nearby village and Mary Barys provided a hiding place and protection <strong>for</strong><br />

her. Birnberg immigrated <strong>to</strong> the United States after World War II.<br />

RG-19.051 --- The Goldfarb Family Collection<br />

This collection contains one song booklet and eight postage stamps given <strong>to</strong> students in<br />

the Kassel displaced persons camp, 66 black-and-white pho<strong>to</strong>graphs of the Goldfarb<br />

family in the Kassel and Ziegenhain displaced persons camps, and 22 documents<br />

pertaining <strong>to</strong> the experiences of Roza, Elimelech, and William Goldfarb in those camps.<br />

Biographical/his<strong>to</strong>rical note: Elimelech, Roza, and William Goldfarb lived as refugees in<br />

the Ziegenhain and Kassel displaced persons camps after World War II. Elimelech<br />

Goldfarb, father of William Goldfarb, served as the leader of the Kassel camp.
