William Good‘s testimony describes his childhood in Niemenczyn, Soviet Union, his<br />

persecution by Poles, his narrow escape from execution in Ponary, his experiences hiding<br />

in the <strong>for</strong>est and in the homes of Poles, and his return <strong>to</strong> Vilnius and Niemenczyn after 43<br />

years. Also included are several pho<strong>to</strong>copies of Gdud family pho<strong>to</strong>graphs and an article<br />

from a Vilnius newspaper concerning his return <strong>to</strong> Vilnius.<br />

This memoir was originally published in German as Aus der Hölle Minsk in das<br />

“Paradies” Theresienstadt, and was translated in<strong>to</strong> <strong>English</strong> by Bernard Ahrend. It<br />

describes Loewenstein‘s imprisonment in Terezin, including the deportation of Jews from<br />

the Protec<strong>to</strong>rate of Bohemia and Moravia <strong>to</strong> the camp, the role of the SS in the camp, the<br />

―self administration‖ of the Jewish elders, the treatment of children and the elderly, and<br />

the liberation of Terezin by the Red Army.<br />
