survived. Her later married name was Hirschler. After liberation in 1945, she found<br />

Gerald at the Kowalik family house. Mother and son lived <strong>for</strong> a few years in the<br />

displaced persons camp at Bergen-Belsen be<strong>for</strong>e immigrating <strong>to</strong> the United States. At<br />

Gerald Kaiser‘s urging in 1986 Yad Vashem honored these families with the recognition<br />

of ―Righteous Among the Nations.‖<br />

<strong>English</strong> and French from and <strong>to</strong> the émigré Irish writer, James Joyce, author of Ulysses<br />

(1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939). Included are letters, postcards, and news articles<br />

concerning Joyce‘s ef<strong>for</strong>ts <strong>to</strong> assist Jewish refugees.<br />

Provenance: The donor is William Hahn, whose aunt and uncle were Italian Jews aided<br />

by Joyce during the <strong>Holocaust</strong>.<br />
