New York Office, 1919–1981<br />

This collection contains records of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), divided in<strong>to</strong> four<br />

sub-series. Sub-series 1, Alphabetical Files 1919–1981, comprises the bulk, primarily<br />

records from 1940–1960; sub-series 2, Monty Jacobs‘ International Files 1949–1973,<br />

consists of files of the Press Direc<strong>to</strong>r and Executive Direc<strong>to</strong>r in the 1950s and 1960s; subseries<br />

3, Publications 1930–1974, consists of two boxes of publications by the WJC and<br />

other organizations; and sub-series 4, International Alphabetical Files—Correspondence<br />

and Clippings 1949–1981, contains 18 boxes on countries and regions.<br />

RG-67.015M Series E (the Culture Department) of the Records of the World Jewish<br />

Congress, New York Office, 1943–1974<br />

This collection contains records of the World Jewish Congress‘ (WJC) Culture<br />

Department in New York, established in March 1945 <strong>to</strong> assist with reconstructing the<br />

spiritual and cultural life of <strong>Holocaust</strong> survivors, recovering cultural treasures and<br />

communal archives, and strengthening the intellectual vitality of Jewish life in the<br />

Western hemisphere and of Sephardic life in the Mediterranean region. Document types<br />

include correspondence, reports, publications, and materials on <strong>to</strong>pics such as the ―school<br />

adoption‖ plan, cultural delegations <strong>to</strong> Europe and South America, essay contests,<br />

relations with UNESCO, and conferences on Yiddish- and Hebrew-language culture.<br />

Note: Variations of the name appear including Education Department, Cultural<br />

Department, and Department of Culture and Education.<br />
