This collection contains the office files of Hans Bachmann, personal secretary <strong>to</strong> Carl J.<br />

Burckhardt. The files contain in<strong>for</strong>mation about assistance <strong>to</strong> Jews in various countries and<br />

<strong>to</strong> civilian detainees in concentration camps in Germany from 1939 <strong>to</strong> 1945; administrative<br />

records of the Department of Special Assistance (DAS) relating <strong>to</strong> actions in favor of Jews;<br />

records relating <strong>to</strong> material and moral assistance from the ICRC <strong>to</strong> European Jews; general<br />

records on ghet<strong>to</strong>s and concentration camps <strong>for</strong> Jews; ICRC appeals <strong>to</strong> various governments<br />

requesting respect <strong>for</strong> the Geneva Convention and the rules of war; appeals from<br />

governments, NGOs, individuals, and national Red Cross organizations <strong>for</strong> intervention by<br />

the ICRC in cases of violations of laws and conventions; and ICRC correspondence with the<br />

League of Nations on the question of refugees in Europe, especially Jews fleeing<br />

persecution in Germany. Other <strong>to</strong>pics include the emigration of Jews <strong>to</strong> Palestine and<br />

elsewhere; ICRC work with Jewish and other organizations; deportations of Jews from<br />

European countries, including individual cases and testimonies about Nazi atrocities;<br />

proposals and projects <strong>to</strong> improve the conditions of Jews in Europe; and an ICRC<br />

diplomatic mission <strong>to</strong> Iraq regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict from 1949 <strong>to</strong> 1950.<br />

This collection contains reports, bulletins, general correspondence, name lists, ―welfare<br />

messages,‖ financial records, newspaper clippings, pho<strong>to</strong>graphs, and various other records<br />

relating <strong>to</strong> the work of American Relief <strong>for</strong> Poland from 1939 <strong>to</strong> 1952. The files of the<br />

Lisbon office contain the reports and general correspondence of Florian Piskorski, the<br />

American Relief <strong>for</strong> Poland delegate <strong>for</strong> Europe; name lists of Polish and Jewish refugees,<br />

Polish prisoners of war, and Roman Catholic priests in concentration camps who were<br />

receiving aid; and general records relating <strong>to</strong> American Relief <strong>for</strong> Poland‘s work with<br />

various branches of the Red Cross throughout Europe.<br />
