organisation, and to refocus the normative priority of global<br />

politics from the needs of raison d’etait and the market to<br />

the preconditions of human dignity.<br />

Anti-foundationalist deliberative liberal democracy<br />

will surely not extinguish cultural and political conflicts and<br />

the difficulties of elaborating and implementing appropriate<br />

democratic practices. Yet, I believe it represents our best<br />

hope for civilising those conflicts and keeping bridging<br />

democratic deficits wherever they appear. It represents our<br />

best hope for replacing violent and deaf confrontation with<br />

peaceful and fruitful conversation across differences, and<br />

making democracy and human rights follow the steps of<br />

economic and cultural globalisation. Our best hope for<br />

starting building a common ground for cross-cultural<br />

debate and cosmopolitan citizenship, and keeping the<br />

Enlightenment’s project of human rights and emancipation<br />

alive<br />
