Working on the theme. It’s an expression used by Artaud,
in his Van Gogh. Working on the theme comes
down to concentration on a theme, something repeated
indefinitely that seeks to grasp, by repeating a single
phrase, the totality of its variations. Working on the theme, repeating
it time after time, defines a field of work whose basis
lies not in the uncertainty of its form, but in its essence, its
solid core, perpetually redefined, its affirmation in the creative
space of thought put into action. This activity of research,
which could seem hesitant, tentative, actually underlines what
confirms its strength, what determines the power of the possible.
It methodically lays out the possibilities, constantly repeating
its basic form of reflection. Ricercar, in the true sense
of the word borrowed form the Italian, signifies not only a new
investigation but the re-statement of what it finds, a definition
which is forever temporary. The work on the theme becomes
the basis of the theme, a basis which grasps only what is at the
core of its power and extracts from it a response that is concentrated
in its character of that moment. A response which,
while establishing itself as a solution for the time being, contains
all the tracks through which it can make its variations, its
future possibilities, and thus remains incomplete, in suspense.
This indirect or implied questioning in the word Ricercar is essential,
in that it can trace and retrace space, emptying and
refilling it from every side – above, below, before, behind, diagonally
– in order to establish its body, its corpus, something
that cannot be reduced to material or means other than those
which appear in that immediate statement, which makes it at
once a sign, something graphic, and something beneath the
sign, a movement, a series in movement.
Who looks and who sees? What do we look at and what do we
see? The long-range perspective of the stage is also looking
and seeing, shimmering in this speculative reflection, turning
into both a slice of palpable, present time and an expectation
where the question of looking and seeing resonates from one
side to another – stage and audience – like a persistent echo,
suspending the question and its answer in the longest possible
time of perception and response: like the time between setting
up and taking a photographic view. It is the sounding of an alert
Praca nad motywem. Zwrot, którego użył Artaud w Van
Goghu. Praca nad motywem oznacza skoncentrowanie
przedefiniowywanie, jej afirmacja w kreatywnej przestrzeni
myśli i zrodzonego z tej myśli działania. To poszukiwanie,
wariacji, przyszłych możliwości, i dlatego też pozostaje ona
opróżniając ją i ponownie wypełniając z każdej strony – nad,
w ruchu.
(…)
Kto patrzy, a kto widzi?
w którym kwestia patrzenia i widzenia rezonuje z obu stron
– sceny i widowni – jak uporczywe echo, zawieszając pytanie
