Krystian Lupa, citation
uzasadnienie
rystian Lupa, born in 1943, today stands as a theatrical
reference point: a special, unique, exemplary point. He is
a director who belongs to what we call, with a noble and
precise terminology, art theatre, but it is an art theatre made different
from the normal perception by this director who is more
than a director. He does not offer an auteur’s world like those of
Wilson or Kantor, nor does he content himself with the interpretation,
however brilliant, of dramatic literature, be it contemporary
or classic. Lupa’s theatre bears the mark of a cultural tradition
particular to central Europe, which he asserts and enhances to
the point of establishing it as a world vision.
A theatre in which the novel, from Dostoevski to Musil or Bernhardt,
is brought to life without in any way losing its epic dimension
or human density. A theatre of inevitable ‘extinction’ accompanied
by human somersaults and a galaxy of words put there to
throw light on behaviour, to question destinies, to legitimise murder
or to explain passion. Lupa goes back to the novels, respecting
their abundant spirit, convinced that we have to follow their
endless track of words in order to explain actions, that we must
trust them, and their characters, in their struggle to reach the
nub of being, without falling prey to their most extreme diversions.
With Lupa, the novel is an experience to which theatre devotes
itself out of a need to explain humanity and a taste for a challenge.
‘Submitting to the novel’s test’, a test of this European invention,
as Kundera put it: that is the test to which Lupa and his art submit
themselves. Not just to ‘tell a tale’, but to ‘lose oneself’ and
draw the spectator into this nocturnal maze from which he will
not escape unscathed. A subtle adventure, a perilous expedition,
a journey towards the unknown. Lupa does not try to elucidate,
nor to obfuscate - he brings the novel to the stage in the name
of an irrepressible need to explore, to move forward step by step
to the ‘forbidden part’ of our being, that part that is cut off from
social behaviour and exchange. With him we go forward, penetrating
into the ‘dark wood’. If Lupa’s theatre finds fulfilment above all
in this encounter with the novel, it happens also because of the
exceptional quality of playing that the Polish maestro achieves. His
emblematic actor, Piotr Skiba, is the proof of this penetration into
the deepest part of the self without showing an applied technique
or the pressure of an approach. We see a being alone in the face
of exceptional actions, whose complexity he tries to show – and
succeeds. Lupa’s actor charms us to the extent that he creates
in an audience the feeling that he is wedded to the unfolding of
the writing, that he is the visible presence of the writer. Which is
why the stage becomes the material presence of the page. It is
reflected and recognised, to the delight of those present in the
audience at this unique echo-play. Lupa does not put novels on
K
rystian Lupa (urodzony w roku 1943) zajmuje dzisiaj miejsce
niesienia.
Teatr
Lupy nosi swoiste piętno tradycji kulturalnej Europy środkowej, do
ludzkie dreszcze i konstelacja słów, mających tłumaczyć zachowanie,
poznać przeznaczenie, usprawiedliwiać morderstwo czy
wyjaśniać namiętność. Lupa powraca do powieści, szanując ich
skłonność do rozlewności, przekonany o konieczności przejścia
powieść w teatr z niepohamowanej potrzeby eksploracji, marszu
krok po kroku w stronę „przeklętej części” bytu, części, którą
nie wolno ujawniać ani się nią dzielić. Wraz z nim posuwamy się
naprzód, docierając do „ciemnego lasu”.
