The Fondación Instituto Internacional del Teatro del Mediterráno
was granted its status as a non-profit foundation
by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Law 18/10/91).
Article 4 of its statute states that its aim is to encourage and
promote live performances and all kinds of cultural initiatives
that may contribute to the development and manifestation of
Mediterranean culture in all its aspects, and to cultural exchange
and solidarity among Mediterráneo peoples. Work involved
in achieving these aims has included the creation and
maintenance of a network across 24 countries: 15 European,
6 African and 3 eastern Mediterranean countries, based on
a concept of all that is Mediterranean in terms of culture. In
1989, the creation of the IITM as an independent foundation
was envisaged to expand and defend cultural dialogue in the
Mediterranean in the knowledge that this was an essential
task to reduce tensions in the area, which are often the fruit
of self-serving and false interpretations of history. Its work has
been recognized by UNESCO which has incorporated it into its
Mediterranean Programme. Since then more than 400 activities
have been carried out in a number of towns in the Mediterranean
area, some in peaceful settings, others in settings
where conflict is or has been present. Many declarations have
gradually defined the ethical commitments of the Institute in
various spheres, in each case giving rise to accompanying networks
or programmes.

Śródziemnomorskiego (Fondación Instituto Internacional
del Teatro del Mediterraneo) ma status organizacji nonprofit,
nadany przez Ministerstwo Edukacji i Kultury (Ustawa z
18.10.91). Artykuł 4 statutu Fundacji stanowi, że celem jej jest
wspieranie i promowanie żywego spektaklu oraz wszelkiego
rodzaju inicjatyw kulturalnych, które mogą przyczynić się
do rozwoju i manifestacji kultury śródziemnomorskiej we
wszystkich jej aspektach oraz do wymiany kulturalnej i
solidarności między narodami basenu Morza Śródziemnego.
Praca związana z realizacją tych celów to między innymi
tworzenie i utrzymanie sieci w 24 krajach: 15 europejskich,
6 afrykańskich i 3 bliskowschodnich, w oparciu o wszystko
to, co w kulturze uważa się za śródziemnomorskie. W roku
1989 zaczęto rozważać nadanie IITM statusu niezależnej
fundacji, celem dalszego umacniania i ochrony przez nią
dialogu kulturalnego w obszarze śródziemnomorskim – w
przekonaniu, że podstawowym zadaniem jest zmniejszanie
napięć w tym rejonie, napięć będących często owocem
stronniczej, fałszywej interpretacji historii. Praca IITM zyskała
uznanie UNESCO, która włączyła ją do swojego Programu
Śródziemnomorskiego. Od tego czasu w wielu miastach
obszaru śródziemnomorskiego przeprowadzonych zostało
ponad 400 działań, niektóre w otoczeniu pokojowym, inne w
sytuacji trwającego lub niedawno zakończonego konfliktu.
Liczne deklaracje stopniowo określiły etyczne zobowiązania
Instytutu w różnych sferach, dając w każdym przypadku impuls
do tworzenia towarzyszących im sieci lub programów.
