particularly preoccupied. As in his masterpiece Bezonken Rood
(Sunken Red, 2004), inspired by a distinguished novel, in which
the protagonist, played by his favourite actor, Dirk Roofthooft,
cannot manage to free himself from the trauma of a childhood
spent in a Japanese camp in which Dutch refugees were interned.
He confirmed his interest in the relationship between
man and his history, without manicheanism or illusion, in his
ever-acclaimed Trilogy of Power (2006-2007). In collaboration
with Tom Lanoye, he first investigated the relationship of the
theatre community with Nazism in his production Méphisto for
ever, an adaptation of the novel by Klaus Mann which Ariane
Mnouchknie first put on stage thirty years earlier. It has not
lost its topicality. The second part, Volskers, took its inspiration
from a film by the Russian director Sokourov, which brought
together the masters of the world to determine its destiny in
their own way: Lenin, Hitler, Emperor Hirohito. Finally, Tom
Lanoye produced an admirable text, Atropa: the Vengeance of
peace. Inspired by the ancient tale of the Trojan War, it addressed
the questions of war, sacrifice, women given up to
death and the men who make those decisions. Guy Cassiers is
continuing his work by putting together a playful piece entitled
A History of the World in 10½ Chapters and preparing a new opera,
House of the Sleeping Beauties, with Kris Defoort. Cassiers’
theatre attracts us through its combination of a sophisticated
scenic language and a particularly complex political standpoint.
The two are never far apart.
48
i Albertine (Albertyna) (2002 –2004) Prousta. Udaje mu się
oddać płynność pisarstwa proustowskiego, a jednocześnie
w japońskim obozie, gdzie przebywali internowani obywatele
holenderscy. Cassiers potwierdza swoje zainteresowanie
powiązaniami między bytem ludzkim i historią, bez manicheizmu
czy złudzeń, w słynnej Trilogie du pouvoir. (Trylogia
władzy, 2006-2007). We współpracy z Tomem Lanoye studiuje
najpierw związki ludzi teatru z nazistowską władzą
w spektaklu Méphisto for ever, adaptacji powieści Klausa
Manna, którą po raz pierwszy wystawiła przed trzydziestu
laty Ariane Mnouchkine. Pytanie pozostaje. Drugi obraz
tryptyku, Wolfskers, to nawiązanie do filmu sygnowanego
przez rosyjskiego twórcę Sokurowa, u którego spotykają
się panowie świata, determinujący na swój sposób jego
losy: Lenin, Hitler, cesarz Hirohito. Na koniec wspaniały
tekst Toma Lanoye Atropa. La Vengeance de la paix (Atropa.
Zemsta pokoju), inspirowany antycznym motywem wojny
10 chapitres et demi (Historia świata w 10 i pół rozdziałach), czy
przygotowując współczesną operę Krisa Defoorta House of
the sleeping beauties (Dom śpiących piękności). Teatr Cassiers
uwodzi połączeniem wyrafinowanego języka scenicznego
i wyjątkowo złożonych poglądów politycznych. Oba te elementy
są tu niezaprzeczalnie równoważne.
