‘I could never create a production that was not infected by my life,’ wrote Antonin Artaud.
My years of travel in theatre have always had a fundamental relation to life. Whether talking with the words of Pasolini or Beckett or again
of Shakespeare, these words would always come up against an autobiographical element. It may be that in the beginning this was born of
an urgent, if naïve desire to use the theatre to exorcise pain, wounds, dark areas. Later, as the years passed, I began to understand that this
inability to ignore the self contained within it a social, a political need: a need to give attention to the scandals of our own violent personal
contradictions in relation to the great scandalous questions of the world. ‘The personal is political,’ was the cry of the Sixties. And I believe
that today, in this age of deep-rooted lies, this phrase has found a new urgency.
Forse all’inizio quella necessità nasceva
