Since its beginnings, the Europe Theatre Prize has sought to establish ongoing links with the other arts. For the three first editions, at the prizegiving ceremony, works of art were presented that took their inspiration from the importance of the award. Ariane Mnouchkine, winner of the first Europe Theatre Prize, and Melina Mercouri, special award, received sculptures by Consagra; Peter Brook, winner of the second Europe Theatre Prize, was presented with a sculpture by Arnaldo Pomodoro, as was Giorgio Strehler, winner of the third edition. At the suggestion of the Grotowski Institute, the celebrated Polish sculptor Krzysztof M. Bednarski – whose career includes working with Jerzy Grotowski – was asked to produce a special creation for the Prize, to be presented to the winners at the prizegiving ceremony for this XIII edition. The work, a visual representation of the prize, is also intended as an hommage to Poland in theatre and art, in recalling Grotowski while celebrating an artist who belongs to Poland, Europe and the world. Furthermore, with the aim of promoting a more direct link with the arts, our organisation launched in 2008 a competition by invitation – as already proposed in the original programme for the Europe Theatre Prize in 1986 – for a symbolic sculpture for the Europe Theatre Prize, open specifically to young European artists. As well as the winning work, all the entries submitted will form part of a travelling exhibition, intended to promote young talent in the field of art. The directors and curators of the most prestigious European galleries and art institutions have therefore been invited, in collaboration with art critics, to make their recommendations of particularly brilliant young sculptors. Sculpture Competition Konkurs Rzeźby Europejska Nagroda Teatralna była od momentu jej powstania środkiem poszukiwania punktów stycznych z rozmaitymi innymi obszarami sztuki. Dlatego też, w trakcie trzech pierwszych edycji Nagród, podczas ceremonii ich rozdania, wręczono laureatom dzieła symbolizujące te właśnie poszukiwania: Ariane Mnouchikne, uhonorowanej Nagrodą w ramach I edycji, oraz Melinie Mercouri, wyróżnionej Nagrodą Specjalną, wręczono rzeżbę Consagry. Peter Brook, laureat Nagrody II edycji otrzymał z kolei rzeżbę Arnoldo Pomodoro, podczas gdy twórcą koncepcji w trakcie kolejnej edycji był Giorgio Strehler. W wyniku sugestii Instytutu Grotowskiego, stworzenie tegorocznej nagrody powierzono znanemu polskiemu rzeźbiarzowi - Krzysztofowi M. Bednarskiemu, który współpracował, między innymi, z Jerzym Grotowskim. Jego dzieło zostanie wręczone zwycięzcom w trakcie uroczystej ceremonii będącej zwieńczeniem XIII edycji Europejskich Nagród. Jego praca, będąca wizualnym symbolem Nagrody, stanowi wyraz uznania dla znaczenia Polski dla rozwoju teatru i sztuki, jak również upamiętnia tak wybitnego artystę jak Grotowski i jego twórczość, należącą do dziedzictwa kulturowego kraju, Europy i całego świata. Z uwagi na chęć podkreślenia łączności pomiędzy rozmaitymi obszarami sztuki, nasza organizacji wprowadziła w 2008 r. w życie ideę konkursu (przewidzianą w programie Nagrody już w 1986 r.) na stworzenie rzeźby-symbolu Europejskiej Nagrody Teatralnej, skierowanego do młodych artystów europejskich. Poza zwycięską koncepcją, wszystkie nadesłane projekty zostały zaprezentowane w ramach zorganizowanej wystawy, w celu promocji młodych talentów na polu współczesnej sztuki. Dyrektorzy oraz kuratorzy najbardziej prestiżowych galerii i instytucji kulturalnych w Europie, wraz z uznanymi krytykami sztuki, zostali zaproszeni , by dokonać wyróżnienia szczególnie obiecujących rzeźbiarzy. 169
