A
poet of social marginalisation and diversity, Pippo Delbono
– now almost fifty – has always seen art as a fundamental
experience for overcoming desperation. Before entering the
theatre he attended various specialised schools, modelling himself
on the restless wanderer in the style of Rimbaud. During his
studies he met the Argentinian Pepe Robledo, who was destined to
become his partner on a long theatrical adventure that began with
them both travelling to Holstebro to train with Iben Nagel Rasmussen.
In 1987, they presented their first show together, Il tempo degli
assassini, which is still part of the repertoire, with Pina Bausch sitting
in on the rehearsals in Wuppertal. Next Delbono staged an adaptation
of Shakespeare’s Henry V in which he involved local youth,
which would be presented in various countries through the decades.
Spurred on by Laura Betti, he then mounted a production of
Pasolini’s La rabbia. An artist of extremes who exudes vitality from
every pore, Pippo contracted AIDS, which he has been fighting with
the help of Buddhism, never ceasing to recruit his fellow actors
from among the disadvantaged or from the streets. He discovered
his “star”, Bobò, in a mental hospital where he had been interned
for 45 years. Deaf and dumb, mentally challenged and illiterate,
and therefore totally isolated, Bobò expresses himself by screeching
like a seagull yet he is able to make his physical presence felt
on stage in scenes from Beckett in Barboni. This work, which has
become the group’s manifesto, took the theatre by storm in 1997 by
presenting a group of disadvantaged individuals intent on discovering
their ability to communicate, shedding light on the mystery of
life. Pippo broke the mould again a year later with Guerra, expressing
a need to represent the kind of life that is born from diversity
with new players found on the streets. Guerra draws its inspiration
from a phrase of Che Guevara’s and juxtaposes extracts from
Buddhist texts and the Book of Ecclesiastes, while the diverse and
the normal clash in the name of the mystery of life born of marginality
and sickness, yet able to express itself also through song
and dance. It was no accident, therefore, that Delbono undertook a
compelling tour in Palestine, performing at the Arab theatre in Jerusalem
and visiting Arafat in Ramallah. Since then the Compagnia
Delbono has toured frequently all over the world, presenting works
ranging from Il silenzio on Oscar Wilde to L’urlo, from Gente di plastica
featuring extracts from Sarah Kane to the total white of Questo
buio feroce on the problem of AIDS, based on This Wild Darkness
by Harold Brodkey, and the almost silent denouncement of deaths
in the workplace in Menzogna, thus continuing, with ever-more
groundbreaking means of expression to explore life’s suffering as
experienced by social outcasts.
ippo Delbono, poeta marginaliazcji i odmienności, zbliżający
Pasoliniego. Artysta ekstremalny, o wybujałej witalności, dotknięty
chorobą AIDS, w zmaganiach z którą pomaga mu buddyzm – nie
przestaje zbierać swoich towarzyszy pracy wśród ubogich, na
ulicach, a w przytułku dla umysłowo chorych odkrywa gwiazdę
swojego teatru – człowieka o przydomku Bobò, przebywającego od
45 lat w zamknięciu, głuchoniemego analfabetę z mikrocefalią, a
mewie krzyki, a jednak zdolnego narzucić widzom władzę swojej
fizyczności i grać nawet sceny z Becketta w Kloszardach (Barboni).
To manifest grupy, który dosłownie wybucha latem roku 1997,
ukazując kolekcję przypadków patologicznych i jednocześnie ludzi
wyjścia zdanie Che Guevary i łączącym fragmenty nauk Buddy i
Jerozolimie i wizyta w Ramallah u Jasera Arafata.
Oscar Wilde, Krzykiem (L’urlo) i Plastikowymi ludźmi (Gente di plastica)
z fragmentami pism Sary Kane, pokazując od absolutnej bieli Tych
dzikich ciemności (Questo buio così feroce), sztuki Harolda Brodkey
poświęceonej problemowi AIDS, aż po niemal pozbawione słów
przesłanie śmierci w pracy Kłamstwo (Menzogna), grupa kontynuuje
– za pośrednictwem coraz bardziej ekstremalnych środków wyrazu
– swoją bolesną podróż przez egzystencję wykluczonych.
