lue itineraries Dai primi del Novecento in poi anche la metropoli californiana ha visto l’arrivo di emigranti liguri che hanno ritrovato qui un angolo della loro patria lontana. Vi hanno piantato le loro radici e non se ne sono più andati, facendo fortuna. I loro discendenti vivono in gran parte a North Beach che poco a poco divenne il punto di riferimento della comunità italiana. Dal 1890 al 1939, gli italo-americani passarono da 5.000 a 60.000 e il quartiere prese il nome di Little Italy. Caratterizzata in particolare da liguri, lombardi, piemontesi e veneti, la comunità italiana rimase abbastanza compatta fino alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Oggi conta quasi 6.000 persone. La piazza salotto: Washington Square Situata a nord-est di Columbus Avenue, tra Filbert e Union Street, è il centro geografico di North Beach. La piazza, che negli anni Sessanta divenne luogo di incontro degli hippy, è contornata da alberi secolari. Nel giardino della piazza, durante le prime ore del mattino, si assiste alla coreografica ginnastica tai-chi, praticata dai cinesi del confinante quartiere di Chinatown. Mentre nella Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church che domina la piazza i fedeli vanno a messa celebrata in inglese, italiano e cinese. Nota alle cronache per il matrimonio tra Marilyn Monroe e Joe di Maggio, è conosciuta dai fedeli come ‘La chiesa del pescatore’ perché, il 19 ottobre di ogni anno, vi si tiene una funzione per la tradizionale benedizione della flotta peschereccia, seguita da una caratteristica processione in direzione di Fisherman’s Wharf di cui i discendenti dei liguri che si dedicano ancora alla pesca sono protagonisti. Starting from the early 1900s, San Francisco saw the arrival of Ligurian immigrants who here found a place so similar to their far-away homeland. They put down roots, and never left. Their descendants live for the most part in North Beach, which soon became a point of reference for the whole Italian community. From1890 to 1939, Italian- Americans grew in numbers from 5,000 to 60,000, and the neighborhood was given the name, Little Italy. Characterized in particular by Ligurians, Piedmontese, Lombards, and Venetians, the Italian quarter remained fairly compact up until the Second World War. Today it counts almost 6,000 people. Washington Square (Piazza) Situated to the northeast of Columbus Avenue, between Filbert and Union Street, this is the geographical center of North Beach. The so-called “outdoor living room”, which during the sixties was a famous hippy meeting place, is surrounded by century-old trees. In the gardens of the “piazza”, during the early hours of the morning, a visitor can observe the gymnastic choreography done by Chinese tai-chi enthusiasts drifting in from neighboring Chinatown. While at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church which dominates the square, the faithful can attend mass celebrated in English, Italian, and Chinese. A note for the chronicles, when speaking of Marilyn Monroe and Joe di Maggio’s wedding the church was noted as “the Church of the Fisherman” because on October 19 of each year, the traditional blessing of the fishing fleet is held here, followed by a picturesque procession heading to Fisherman’s Wharf, where the descendants of Ligurians still fish the seas. Tutti i sabati, tra le 10,30 e le 17, e i mercoledì, tra le 19 e le 22, i clienti e i proprietari del Caffè Trieste (sopra) improvvisano performance musicali e concerti jazz. itinerari blue Tastes and Flavors of Liguria Over a century has passed since they emigrated from their lost villages in the Apennine hinterlands, but the faces of their descendents are the same. They reflect Ligurian traits: lost in their own thoughts, a bit sullen, a bit diffident, they don’t smile a lot. They speak a language that is full of Italian words, mixed into American, with a touch of the dialect of their ancestors. But they know how to make good focaccia. A lui si deve la nascita della banca moderna, la Banca d’Italia fondata nel 1906 Grandi liguri di ieri e di oggi Great Ligurians of the Past and Present Salendo verso Pioneer Park fra gli alti pini spunta sulla sommità del colle la statua di V. di Colbertaldo raffigurante Cristoforo Colombo (1957, nella foto) che guarda arcigno la città. Alle sue spalle si eleva la Coit Memorial Tower, costruita nel 1933 con il lascito alle autorità comunali di 125.000 dollari, elargito dall’eccentrica filantropa Lillie Hitchcock Coit, per commemorare l’opera di salvataggio compiuta in città dai vigili del fuoco durante l’incendio del 1906. Un ascensore conduce al loggiato superiore da cui si gode uno straordinario panorama della città e della baia. Un altro grande genovese ha lasciato il segno in città. E che segno. Renzo Piano ha ristrutturato e reinventato la California Academy of Sciences, al N. 55 di Music Concourse Drive, fondata nel 1853, in un edificio risalente al 1916, è stata riaperta il 27 settembre 2008. Capolavoro di bio-architettura e design eco-sostenibile, è il “museo più verde del mondo” per il suo tetto costituito da 10.000 mq di “tappeto vivente” di piante e fiori. Heading up to Pioneer Park among the pines that rise up from the summit of the hill, there is a statue made by V. di Colbertaldo in 1957 that shows Christopher Columbus sternly watching over the city. Behind him stands the Coit Memorial Tower, built in 1933 with a legacy bestowed upon the city by the eccentric philanthropist, Lillie Hitchcock Coit, to commemorate the fire-fighters who saved the city from the fire of 1906. An elevator here takes you to the upper loggia, where you can enjoy an extraordinary view of the city and the bay. Another great Genoese has left his mark on the city. And what a mark! Renzo Piano has renovated and reinvented the California Academy of Sciences, at 55 Music Concourse Drive. Founded in 1853, in a building dating to 1916, it was reopened on September 27, 2008. A bio-architectural masterpiece of eco-sustainable design, it is “the greenest museum in the world”, with a 10,000 square meter (circa 100,000 sq. ft.) roof that is a “living carpet” of plants and flowers. 103
