in poi, declinata in mille sfumature e in
l’argento e l’oro dell’America spagnola
e la California fervono presto delle loro attività;
antiche relazioni e a nuove opportunità offerte
dall’espansione francese e inglese, arrivano anche
in Canada e negli Stati Uniti.
Italy. A truly trans-national area with a constant
circulation of foreigners with ideas, populated by a
people continually in search of new opportunities. A
region in which allegiance to the citizen system and
the republic formula, to the free market and free
economic acts, where the vivacity of debate and
political conflict bring to life an identity that is
considered by all to be “different”.
So it is not to be wondered that a Ligurian
discovered the New World in 1492. Some of those
who came to join native son Christopher Columbus,
then took on a thousand nuances and began to
speak in a thousand different voices. Their story was
woven into that of the Americas without visible
breaks or pauses. Straddling the 1500s and the
1600s, the “Century of the Genoese” saw gold and
silver from Spanish America overflowing the purses
of the powerful, who built themselves splendid
palaces on the New Street, Strada Nuova, celebrated
and commemorated by Rubens in his book of
drawings.
With South and Central America, Mexico, and later,
California, humming with Ligurians’ activities, they
reached further still. Following old and faithful ties,
they sought out the new opportunities offered by
French and English expansion, thereby arriving in
Canada and the United States.
The ideas and behavior that were natural to the
principles of the American and then the French
Revolution pushed them towards a modernization
of the system, making use of the results of the
English industrial revolution. Angelo Garibaldi,
brother of the more famous Giuseppe, businessman
and Consul in Philadelphia, was the first to propose,
in 1830, a “Navigation Line” between the Kingdom
of Sardinia and North America, which then became
an oceanliner route under Raffaele Rubattino. One
hundred years later, after the Unification of Italy,
Genoa – flanked by Savona, La Spezia, and Imperia
– will still be the Capital of Italian Steel, and of the
sugar industry, the leading port for international
