In quella circostanza
collegamento con New York portando
collaborazione col Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum
of Twentieth-Century Art. Grazie a mirate iniziative
Sexto Canegallo acquisiti anni fa;
altri invece sono approdati nel corrispettivo
contenitore americano.
Per concludere un accenno al
Giannetto Fieschi che se ne va a
New York agli albori degli anni Cinquanta
e realizza alcune opere, come
il collage su tavola “I gatti
hanno fame”,
che iconograficamente
precorrono
di qualche lustro
la “pop art”.
Una scoperta dell’America
di cui
egli non si è mai fatto
carico.
Uno dei celebri "generali" di
Enrico Baj. Il pittore milanese
nel 1992 avrebbe dovuto
allestire una grande mostra
evento insieme a Bob
Rauschenberg per gemellare
Genova e New York
One of the most famous
“general” exhibitions by
Enrico Baj was one that was
never held. The renown
painter from Milan, with Bob
Rauschenberg, planned a
great event in 1992
their environments, maybe even in a contest between
two anthologies by their maestros of reference. This
would be carried out in both directions in an ideal
route which was to create a binding tie between the
Genoa of Christopher Columbus and the America of
his and our (at least at the time) dreams.
Unfortunately nothing came of this. But in those
circumstances at Castelli, I met our great art critic,
Germano Celant, who had established an important
connection with New York, bringing with him the
seeds of “poor art” which he officially presented in
1967 at a show at the Galleria La Bertesca in Genoa.
His collaboration with the Salomon R. Guggenheim
Museum should also be highlighted. Here he fulfilled
the charge of Senior Curator of Twentieth-Century
Art, and thanks to his targeted initiatives - such as the
show, “Italian Metamorphosis 1943-1968” in 1994 -
he encouraged the growth of artistic relationships
between Italy and the United States. And let us not
forget the importance of the Fluxus movement –
created by American George Maciunas – which
enjoyed particular “resonance” at the Galleria
Unimedia run by Caterina Gualco. Even just recently
she has hosted performances by Ben
Patterson and Philip Corner.
And what would you say regarding
Micky Wolfson In Miami his museum
promotes the art of propaganda, with
works coming in the main from Italy
and Genoa. Our city was at the hub
of his interests (he spent years
renovating Castello Mackenzie which
was to hold his cultural holdings
related to Italy), and he continues to
carry out an important role. In fact
one part of his collection is at the
Wolfsoniana in Nervi. Here you can
enjoy some extraordinary symbolist
paintings by Sexto Canegallo which
were acquired a few years ago.
Others instead arrived in their
corresponding American container.
To conclude let us refer to
Giannetto Fieschi who went to New
York at the start of the Fifties and
there created works like his
collage on a board “The
Cats Are Hungry”,
which in terms of
icon-graphics was a
precursor of some of
pop art’s luster. A
discovery of America
for which he has never
taken credit.
