lue interview Luisi,Maestro at the Met signore del Metropolitan Fabio Luisi, 54 anni. Sarà a Genova dal 18 al 31 maggio con La Traviata Fabio Luisi, 54, directs the orchestra at the Metropolitan Opera House of New York; he returns to his native Genoa from May 18 to 31 38
Since 2011, he is the “Principal Director” of the prestigious “Met”, the Opera House of New York, after an extraordinary career as orchestra director in Italy, Austria (“my second home”), and the U.S. In May he will be back in “his own” Genoa to conduct Verdi and Wagner Non credete a quello sguardo. That mixture of formal demeanor and apparent detachment. There is fire inside of Fabio Luisi, and you have the sensation that it can flare up from one moment to the other, from behind those round glasses, and that typically Genoese scowl, while he tells you how he conquered New York. Since September 2011 he is the “Principal Guest Conductor” at the prestigious Metropolitan Opera House; the first Italian to reach these heights since the times of Arturo Toscanini. A strange destiny for someone who started off playing the piano (before he dedicated himself full time to directing orchestras). The divergence in the road of his life has a name, Milan Horvat, and a place, Austria, “his second home”. And starting from there is his extraordinary ascent to the Olympics of world opera, passing through Vienna, Paris, Milan, Chicago, without forgetting “his” Genoa, where he is to return in May to conclude the season with Verdi’s Traviata and a piano concerto with music from Mozart and Wagner. And, between one exhibition and another, on February 10 he even satisfied a whim, and won a Grammy Award – with L’anello del nibelungo, awarded the best opera of 2013. So, your metamorphasis into a “classic star” is now complete I don’t feel like a star. Certainly, the Grammy is important because it brings together diverse types of music. The hope that we artists of the “classical business” hold is that it will increase curiosity with respect to our repertoire on the part of a public that is different from the usual one. Let’s take a step back in time, to your beginnings as a pianist. I started studying piano with Memi Schiavina, in Genoa, where I got my diploma as a private student at the conservatory, Conservatorio Paganini. In an artistic geography that is ever more Eurocentric, is Genoa still a good school Oh, absolutely. Many high profile musicians have come out of this conservatory. The problem, if anything, is at higher levels, and not related only to Genoa, but to the entire Italian situation. Under the last few governments, Lorenzo Tosa 39
