Walking above the main tanks
will let visitors hear, live, the
sounds that dolphins emit to
communicate.
But the real novelty of the
structure is the great glassed-in
underwater tunnel, 15 meters
long, where the dolphins swim
over the heads of the visitor. “The
new pavilion,” explains Beppe
Costa, “will add around 45
minutes to the average stay of
the visitor.
This should then be reflected in
added time spent by tourists in
the city, creating greater earnings
for the Genoese economic
system.”
There are also new features at the
Galata Museum of the Sea, which
with its 28 halls is the biggest
maritime museum in the
Mediterranean. Here you can
really climb on board a
submarine, the Nazario Sauro, in
the waters in front of the
museum, or a XVII Century
galleon on the ground floor of
the museum, or check out an
Atlantic crossing in the MeM –
Memory and Migration spaces
that recreate the interiors of turn
of the century oceanliners. For

2013, il Galata ha deciso
di ammodernare, dotandola di
postazioni multimediali, la Sala di
Colombo, dove si trova il più celebre
ritratto dell’esploratore, attribuito
a Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio.
Grande attesa anche per la
nuova Sala della Tempesta, che
dalla prossima estate farà rivivere,
grazie al 3D e a vere cerate da
vela, l’esperienza più temuta dagli
uomini di mare: affrontare su
una scialuppa onde a forza 8.
Il mare, quello vero, per chi sperimenterà
una CrocierAcquario, il
percorso che unisce la visita all’Acquario
di Genova con
un’escursione in battello nel Santuario
dei Cetacei. A bordo, un
biologo marino dell’Acquario e
un esperto WWF sveleranno tutti
i segreti degli animali che si potranno
avvistare nel Mar Ligure,
habitat di delfini e balenottere. I
tour si svolgono ogni sabato pomeriggio,
a partire da aprile, anche
il martedì a luglio e agosto.
Spring 2013, the Galata has
decided to modernize.
It will add multi-media
workstations to the Sala di
Colombo, where the most famous
portrait of the explorer –
attributed to Ridolfo del
Ghirlandaio – is displayed. Also
highly awaited is the new Hall of
the Storms, which next summer
will allow visitors to experience,
thanks to 3D screens and sailing
oilskins, the experience that
sailors most fear, that of facing
seas on a small boat with a gale
force wind.
And the real sea can be
experience on an Aquarium
Cruise, CrocierAcquario, which
takes visitors through the
Aquarium of Genoa and then off
on a boat excursion to the Whale
Sanctuary off the coast of the
Riviera. A marine biologist and a
WWF expert on board will reveal
all the secrets of the animals that
can be seen in the Ligurian Sea,
including dolphins and whales.
The tour will be held every
Saturday afternoon, starting
April, and also on Tuesday in July
and August.

Sleeping with the
Sharks
L’esperienza diretta, insieme
emozionante ed educativa, è la
chiave di tutte le attività
dell’AcquarioVillage. A partire da
quelle dedicate ai più piccoli.
Possono sognare di essere dei
Giovanni Soldini in erba con gli
appuntamenti di Prova la vela,
al Museo Galata, o – a proposito
di sogni, ma ad occhi aperti –
dormire per una notte a tu per tu
con gli squali, nella sala a loro
dedicata all’interno dell’Acquario.
Un’iniziativa, questa, che ha fatto
registrare il tutto esaurito ogni
volta che è stata proposta. Per
bambini – e genitori – inoltre,
AcquarioVillage è protagonista di
Slow Fish, il salone del pesce
sostenibile curato da Slow Food e
che quest’anno si svolge al Porto
Antico (9-12 maggio), con
attività specifiche sul tema del
consumo ittico consapevole.
Direct experience, both exciting
and educational, is the key to all
the activities at the
AcquarioVillage. Starting with
the little ones. They can try out
sailing as a sport in the “Prova
la Vela”, at the Galata Museum,
or spend the night with sharks –
a sleep-over in the hall
dedicated to the sharks with
them peering in through the
glass window wall in the interior
of the Aquarium. This initiative
fills up immediately the moment
it is offered. Then children and
their parents will both enjoy
Slow Fish, the fair dedicated to
sustainable fishing with the
Slow Food movement as curator.
This year it will be held in Porto
Antico from May 9 – 12, with
the AcquarioVillage as a main
player, and specific activities on
the theme of conscientious fish
consumption.
