Ora lavora alla cittadella del sapere ad Harlem dove i neuroscienziati cercheranno di svelare i misteri del cervello umano Renzo Piano has brought the humanism of our culture to America. An example is his New Times Building, the first skyscraper built after 9-11, which gave hope in the future back to the Big Apple. Today he is working on the new Columbia University campus in Harlem where neuroscientists will seek to unlock the mysteries of the human brain Per gli americani è il moderno Brunelleschi che ha ridisegnato il profilo di molte città ed esportato la cultura dell’urbanità europea nelle loro metropoli. La luce e la For Americans he is the modern Brunelleschi who has redesigned the skyline of many of their cities importing European “urbanity” into their metropolises. For New Yorkers, Renzo Piano is something yet more: the architect who built the first skyscraper after 9-11 (September 11), giving a strong response to the fear spread by terrorism, and giving hope in the future back to the inhabitants of the Big Apple. That 52 floor skyscraper, 318 meters high – one foot lower (deliberately done) than the Empire State Building – is the new headquarters for the New York Times. Erected amidst obsessions about terrorism along with pride in rebirth, it was inaugurated in 2007. Piano, the first architect to visit the still smoking ruins at Ground Zero, remembers his meetings with journalists and with the owners on the first drafts of his project. “At first all they talked about was security, and I began to ask myself if it was possible to build skyscrapers that were terrorist-proof,” he tells us. “I answered naturally that it was not possible. That our civilization is magnificent but fragile, and it is permeable to lunatics. And yet, though I respected their legitimate concerns, I explained that a fortress did not seem to me to be the ideal headquarters for a world-famous newspaper. One that must go down into the streets where there is life and news.” And that building for news and ideas grew up just as he had imagined it, in a triumph of transparency and color. And light.
