Passion for Chocolate<br />
At the center of Ghirardelli Square<br />
facing on Fisherman’s Wharf, was<br />
the chocolate factory founded in<br />
1850 by Domenico Ghirardelli,<br />
born in Rapallo in 1817. In the<br />
years that followed, the red brick<br />
building, a fine example of<br />
industrial architecture, was added<br />
on to and redone. When<br />
production at the factory<br />
eventually moved elsewhere, the<br />
structure was converted in 1967<br />
into a mall with art galleries, shops,<br />
cafés, and restaurants. It also holds<br />
the Ghirardelli Chocolate<br />
Manufactory, restored in the<br />
sixties, where visitors can observe<br />
the process of chocolate-making<br />
(Ghirardelli is still America’s finest)<br />
with original machinery, and<br />
sample products at its bar and<br />
candy shop.<br />
