The Thirteenth Night
Quattro artisti per più di venti
strumenti. In programma dal 2 al 4
maggio, con l’Acoustic Night
edizione 2013 (la prima risale al
2001) Beppe Gambetta ha voluto
riunire alcuni dei più grandi
polistrumentisti del suo genere.
Lavorando su voce, fiati,
percussioni, strumenti a corda e
numerosissime tipologie di chitarra,
a portare il pubblico in mondi
lontani saranno John Jorgenson,
uno dei protagonisti di "Dialogs" (il
primo e storico disco di Gambetta,
registrato durante il suo primo
viaggio negli States), collaboratore
– tra gli altri – di Elton John e
Bonnie Raitt, Mike Dowling,
versatile autore di roots music
americana, dal Piedmont style (lo
stile dei maestri del Blues come
Mississippi John Hurt e Tampa Red)
al bottleneck blues e il vintage jazz,
e Radim Zenkl, californiano
originario della Repubblica Ceca,
dove ha studiato pianoforte, canto
e chitarra prima di innamorarsi del
mandolino americano ascoltando i
dischi che venivano
"contrabbandati" nell'allora
Cecoslovacchia.
Four artistes but more than twenty
instruments. On the program for
May 2 to 4, for Acoustic Night
2013 (the first was held in 2001)
Beppe Gambetta has decided to
gather together the greatest
players of multiple instruments in
his genre. Working with voice,
winds, percussion, string
instruments, and an incredibly vast
selection of guitar types, is John
Jorgenson, one of the leading
characters in Gambetta’s first and
historic record, "Dialogs", recorded
during his first visit to the United
States. Then there is Mike
Dowling, the versatile inventor of
American roots music, from the
Piedmont style (the style of the
Masters of the Blues like Mississippi
John Hurt and Tampa Red) to
bottleneck blues and vintage jazz,
and Radim Zenkl, who though
from California now, grew up in
the Czech Republic where he
studied piano, voice, and guitar
before he fell in love with the
American mandolin, listening to
records which were “smuggled”
into what was then Czechoslovakia.

numero 13, dal 2 al 4 maggio al Teatro della Corte,
e agli States ha appena dedicato il suo nuovo
disco in uscita, “The American Album”, ispirato e
dedicato alla musica “roots” statunitense.
Un lavoro ancora più americano dei suoi album
precedenti, che pure al folk d’oltreoceano dovevano
tanto.
Esatto. Al contrario dei miei lavori precedenti, dischi
di contaminazioni con la musica italiana ed
europea, ho costruito canzoni volutamente molto
semplici: con una o due chitarre, come molti amici
e appassionati da tempo mi chiedevano, muovendomi
esclusivamente nel campo della musica
americana. Per me è qualcosa di artisticamente
nuovo. Ho cercato di fare nel mio mondo ciò che
fece Sergio Leone con i film western interpretati
con gusto italiano.
È un omaggio all’America di Guthrie e Seeger:
chitarra e tanta strada sotto i piedi
Sarebbe bellissimo essere come Pete Seeger: un
folksinger che a 90 anni e oltre prova ancora a
cambiare il mondo con le sue canzoni e la sua
energia. Con lui ci siamo incontrati qualche volta,
di Guthrie mi ha raccontato l’insegnamento più
prezioso che gli ha lasciato: «come salire sul treno
in corsa: – mi ha confidato – prima si lancia la chitarra,
poi si salta su».
Quali Stati Uniti ha scoperto, in tournèe nel
2012 e nel 2013
L’ultimo tour mi ha regalato grandi soddisfazioni.
Viaggiavo in coppia con il polistrumentista Peter
Ostroushko, abbiamo guidato dal Nord della California
fino al Texas e ritorno, passando per Arizona,
Nevada e New Mexico.
Una sera abbiamo suonato
vicino a Chicago all’Auditorium
del Fermilab, uno dei
più importanti Istituti di Ricerca
al mondo, e dopo il
concerto ho scoperto che il
direttore e gli scienziati più
importanti del Centro erano tutti italiani: ci siamo
ritrovati a tarda notte a casa di uno di loro
a mangiare e cantare insieme “Dio è morto”.
Quanta Italia, e quanta Liguria, si incontrano
sulle strade d’America
Gli incontri con liguri ed emigranti liguri non
accadono spesso ma sono molto intensi, a
volte indimenticabili. Ricordo
un dialogo con
una signora di ottant’anni in
dialetto ligure forbito. L’aveva imparato
dal papà e dai nonni a Sacramento, in California,
i suoi bisnonni venivano da Santa
road”. It doesn’t tire him to divide his musician’s heart

At the same time he has just dedicated his new album,
just out, to the States, as it is completely inspired and
dedicated to American “roots” music.
A work that is yet more American than your earlier
albums, though even they were heavily influenced
by folk music from across the ocean.
That’s right. Unlike my previous works, albums which
are contaminated with Italian and European music, I
deliberately constructed songs that were very simple –
with one or two guitars, like lots of my friends and
fans having been asking me for some time. It is a very
challenging step in which I have tried to express
something technically and artistically new, moving
exclusively through the field of American music. I tried
to create in my own world, what Sergio Leone did with
Westerns, interpreting them with a taste of the Italian.
So it’s a homage to Guthrie and Seeger, with the
guitar and a lot of road under your feet
I would love to be like Pete Seeger - a folksinger who
at 90 something is still trying to change the world
with his songs and his energy. I have met him a couple
of times. He told me that the most precious thing that
Guthrie taught him was “how to get on a moving
train” that’s what he told me, “first you throw your
guitar in, then you climb on board”. I, instead, am a
musician first – I try to send positive messages with
the choice and the contents of my artistic proposals.
What United States did you discover on your tours
in 2012 and 2013
The last tour gave me great satisfactions and
wonderful memories. My encounters with true friends
bring me unforgettable moments. We traveled as a
couple with Peter Ostroushko, who
plays many instruments. The
itinerary was complicated: from
North California we drove to Texas
and back, passing through Arizona,
Nevada, and New Mexico. One
evening we played near Chicago at
the Auditorium of the Fermilab, one of the most
important research institutes in the world, and after
the concert I discovered that the Director and all of
the most important scientists at the Center were
Italians. So we all gathered together late in the night
at the house of one of them, and we ate, and we
sang “Dio è Morto” together.
How much of Italy, and
how much of Liguria, does
one meet on the roads of
America
Meetings with Ligurians and Ligurian emigrants
don’t happen all that often, but when they do,
