Nella mente di Dio
In God’s Mind
The LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) satellite will be
launched into space sometime between 2018 and 2020. Its
mission is to discover the universe before the Big Bang. By
measuring the speed with which galaxies are moving away from us, it is
possible to understand how the universe is expanding, and thereby
calculate the route of the stars at the original explosion, 13.7 billion
years ago. It is a way of “rewinding the film of creation” seeking out the
traces. But up till now, our present-day telescopes have not been able to
get past the barrier of 400,000 years after the cosmic explosion.
To take this further step towards what has already been announced as
the greatest discovery in astrophysics, LISA was created. This third
generation telescope – following on the optical ones first made by
Galileo and then radio telescopes – will let us “see” deeper into space,
interpreting gravitational forces by taking advantage of Einstein’s
theories on space-time curvature.
The project involves the launching of three satellites connected together
by laser beams to form a triangle that covers three million miles. This
enormous net should be able to catch gravitational waves generated by
the Big Bang which are still floating in space. And thus, scientists will be
able to go back to a trillionth of a second after the event.
So, will this scientific adventure answer man’s questions on the origin of
the Universe His attempts – which already got him kicked out of the
Garden of Eden – to enter God’s mind
The LISA satellite and the determination of scientists have stimulated in
me an optimism that I hope I am sharing with you, dear reader. And
namely, if soon the “grandfather” of all cosmic mysteries is about to be
revealed (What is nothing made up of Why should nothing explode
How did it explode) certainly we should soon be able to answer the
“grandmother” of all enigmas: Italian politics.
