normalmente fermo possa ammogliarsi qui,
perché prima di decidersi si innamorerebbe di
un’altra... ». E aggiunge: «There may be prettier women
in Europe, but I doubt it «Potranno esserci
donne più belle in Europa, ma ne dubito». E così
via ridendo in quel gran libro che è Gli innocenti
all’estero, e che si vorrebbe dare in mano alle migliaia
di giovani americani che oggi vengono in Liguria,
non per visitare i palazzi di Strada Nuova ma
per accamparsi alle Cinque Terre. La loro vacanza
europea consiste di solito di quattro giorni sulle
Alpi e quattro giorni a Vernazza e dintorni. Tale è
la fama dei minuscoli villaggi che nessun visitatore
dell’Ottocento poté conoscere. In effetti sarebbe
una buona idea aprire là un piccolo museo virtuale
sulla Liguria, oltre a crearne uno on-line, per
tentare qualcuno dei tanti giovani curiosi a visitare
le arcate di Sottoripa sotto le quali passeggiarono
(turandosi il naso) Howells e James.
Le pagine di Henry James in Ore italiane sull’Albergo
Croce di Malta, enorme e affrescato con la
«fatale facilità di alcuni secoli or sono», «fatal facility
of a couple of centuries ago», sono notevoli,
come quelle che egli dedica al Golfo della Spezia,
che visita mentre la neonata Italia unita ne
sta facendo un grande porto militare. In carrozza
si fa portare a Portovenere, villaggio «dolcemente
desolato e antiquato come il nome che
porta», e si sofferma davanti alla targa che all’ingresso
della Grotta Byron decanta il fosco poeta
che vi avrebbe trovato ispirazione, il che suscita
l’ironia dell’americano James, come le reliquie
provocano l’ironia di Mark Twain.
James è più disposto a commuoversi sulla terrazza
di Casa Magni a San Terenzo pensando agli ultimi
giorni di Shelley, e sugli spalti del Castello di
Lerici, da cui al tramonto contempla «il tragico pallido
villino che fissa la luna via via più luminosa»,
«the pale-faced tragic villa stared up at the brightening
moon». Ecco un brano da far leggere ai
saccopelisti con chitarra alla scoperta a Monterosso
della Liguria di oggi e sempre.
Poco lontano, a Bocca di Magra, una combattiva
intellettuale americana del secolo XX, Mary
McCarthy, trascorreva le estati dei primi anni 1960,
scrivendo uno dei romanzi epocali del dopoguerra,
Il gruppo, storia di ragazze colte che escono da studi
privilegiati per farsi strada nella giungla degli anni
centrali del secolo. Su queste vacanze con amici
italiani McCarthy compose anche un racconto
lungo, I segugi dell’estate, The Hounds of Summer,
che ricostruisce quel momento di calma laboriosa,
il quindicennio postbellico, prima delle deflagrazioni
politiche dei tardi anni 1960.

would fall in love with somebody else...”. He added,
“There may be prettier women in Europe, but I
doubt it!”
Twain’s magnificent notes in “The Innocents
Abroad” would be good reading for the countless
American youngsters who today come to Liguria,
not to visit Genoa’s Unesco World Heritage palaces
but to hang out in the popular Cinque Terre. Their
typical European vacation consists in four days in
the Alps and four days in one of the five
picturesque seaside villages, which no visitor in the
1800s had ever heard of. Indeed, it would be a good
idea to open a little museum in the Cinque Terre to
introduce the campers to the rest of Liguria, to
tempt them to visit Genoa’s arched portico of
Sottoripa under which Howells and James
promenaded (holding their respective noses).
In some remarkable pages of his “Italian Hours”
Henry James describes the Hotel Croix de Malte,
which appears to him enormous and frescoed “with
the fatal facility of a couple of centuries ago”.
Equally notable are his observations on the Gulf of La
Spezia, which he visits while a newly-born united
Italy is transforming it into a great military port. A
carriage bears him to Portovenere, a village “as
sweetly desolate and superannuated as the name it
bears”, where he stops in front of the plaque at the
entrance of the Byron Grotto, commemorating the
gloomy poet who here allegedly found inspiration,
something that arouses James’ incredulity just as the
religious relics in the Genoa San Lorenzo Cathedral
provoke Mark Twain’s irreverence.
James was more willing to be moved on the terrace
of the Casa Magni in San Terenzo, Shelley’s last
residence before his boat sank off nearby Viareggio.
At sunset, from the battlements of the Castle of
Lerici, James noted “the pale-faced tragic villa
staring up at the brightening moon”.
Not far away, in Bocca di Magra, a combative
American intellectual of the 20th century, Mary
McCarthy, spent summers in the early sixties, writing
one of the crucial novels of the post-war period, “The
Group”. This is the story of ambitious young women
who finish their Vassar studies and make their way in
the jungle of mid-century New York. On vacation
with Italian friends, McCarthy also wrote a long tale,
“The Hounds of Summer”, which depicts an
international community of intellectuals at rest. It is
a notable conversation piece.
These are some of the ways Americans have
experienced and written about Liguria, over the
course of two centuries. Some spent there a good
