e conversazioni con gente dotta, ecclesiastici
e laici,latini e greci, ebrei e saraceni e con
molti altri…» scrive Colombo nel 1501 ai Re Cattolici.
E ai Protettori del Banco di san Giorgio nel
1502: «Benché il corpo sia qui il cuore è lì continuamente»
Esiste nei Liguri, direttamente vissuta o riflessa
nella memoria di chi non è mai partito, una conoscenza
del mondo che li induce ad adattarsi a
ogni altro tipo di vita senza mai rinnegare il proprio.
Nati in una regione periferica alla Penisola
ma essenziale all’estremo Occidente europeo,
aperta al mare e densa di vie di comunicazione
ma povera di materie prime e di fertili campagne,
abituati fin dall’età più antica ad essere guerrieri
e non solo mercanti, i Liguri di qualsiasi classe sociale
lasciano spesso la loro terra. In età medievale
le chances offerte dal più grande porto del
Mediterraneo e dal precoce capitalismo li diffondono
nel mondo sulla scia del grande network di
famiglie-azienda che è «colonna della repubblica
internazionale del denaro». Nasce da questo sistema,
promosso da una città- stato libera e decisa
a superare ogni frontiera, la curiosità di cui
parla Colombo; quella che, fatalmente, conduce
alle “scoperte”.
Cristoforo Colombo, figlio di un lanaiolo della

There exists among Ligurians a knowledge of the
world, which makes them adapt to every type of life
without however ever renouncing their own. Born in a
region on the periphery of the Italian peninsula, which
though, forms an essential part of the western part of
Western Europe. A region open to the sea, with a
dense network of roads and communication, but poor
in prime materials and fertile countryside. A region
whose people since the beginning of time have been
ready to be warriors and not just merchants. Ligurians
of all social classes have often left their land. In
medieval times the opportunities offered by the
greatest port in the Mediterranean and the precocious
start of capitalism spread Ligurians across the world in
the wake of that great network of family companies
which were “the column of the international republic
of money”. Born from this system, and promoted by a
free city-state, and decided upon crossing all frontiers,
is the curiosity of which Columbus speaks. That which
will lead, fatally, to the “discovery”. Christopher
