Goldoni vs. Miller
Goldoni versus Miller
E poi O’ Neil, Henry James, Neil Simon, David Mamet
Teatro Stabile di Genova took Goldoni, a Venetian playwright to the United States in 1960, where
he was highly appreciated, followed by de Filippo and Fo. In exchange, it brought many American
playwrights here beginning with Tennessee Williams, then O’ Neil, Henry James, Neil Simon, David Mamet
Silvana Zanovello
Solenghi in primo piano.
bistrot i fast food
Per molti spettatori Neil Simon è infatti sinonimo
di tutto questo. Ma si tratta proprio del pregiudizio
che Carlo Repetti, direttore dello Stabile,
e Marco Sciaccaluga, condirettore e regista,
a tutto tondo».
The last Ligurian explorers of the New World
theatre of the United States are… The Sunshine
Boys. Under the flagship of Neil Simon, in a
production at the Teatro Stabile in Genoa, the play’s
first Italian debut will be held here in April, with
Eros Pagni and Tullio Solenghi in leading roles.
Somebody in the audience will surely think that
they have not understood correctly. Is this the final
destination of a dialogue with North American
drama that began 62 years ago with Tennessee
Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie”, to pass through
perhaps twenty stops then engraved on the taste of
Italian audiences, breaking down many stereotypes,
until reaching authors that were even more
unconventional like Tony Kushner
What sense does it make to then turn back to
Broadway which seems to be retracing the Parisian
lightness of the past, to be consumed as theatre,
substituting the “bistrot” of the boulevard with fast
food
For many spectators Neil Simon is in fact
synonymous with all that. But it is really just this
prejudice that Carlo Repetti , the director of the
Teatro Stabile, and Marco Sciaccaluga, the codirector
and producer, wish to dispel. “American
prose is concrete. It has its feet well planted in the
society in which it is born, and is able to create
wonderful all-round characters.” The proposal, seen
in this light, also has the advantage of turning us
into passive spectators of American culture. Thus,
with also the advantage of distance, perhaps we can
then tell Americans something interesting about
themselves explaining why we appreciate them. But
naturally these “rediscovered” authors are not seen
