Pedaling between the Sea and the Woods
L’antica ferrovia è stata modernizzata e spostata più a monte in molti tratti e si sono costruite
piste anche verso l’interno come a Taggia e a Lavagna. Per ora sono 70 chilometri che dovrebbero
diventare molti di più. Il tracciato dismesso è diventato pista ciclabile nel Ponente e a Varazze,
Arenzano e Levanto
The old railway line has been modernized and pushed up into the mountains, and in its place
are the loveliest cycling paths in the world, skirting the sea, along the Riviera from Taggia to
Lavagna. At the moment they cover 70 kilometers – western Liguria and Varazze, Arenzano,
and Levanto , but soon they will be much longer

Stiamo per parlare di piste ciclabili
e pedonali ma, come
sempre, racconteremo un po’ di
storia ligure. Inizieremo dalle
ferrovie che hanno fatto materialmente
l’Unità d’Italia e ai liguri
non parve vero di caricare
le bici sui treni e raggiungere finalmente
le pianure con i campioni
d’olio nelle ceste per vendere
il prodotto.
La relazione tra ferrovia e bici
comincia due secoli fa, poi il boom
del turismo dimentica la bici.
Ma come sono brutti quei binari
che tagliano la costa proprio a ridosso
delle spiagge; quanto sono
rumorosi quei treni che ti
passano sotto casa mentre sei in
vacanza. E tuttavia anche quel
tracciato serviva esigenze economiche
vitali: la ferrovia doveva
stare vicino ai porti commerciali
o militari, i vagoni arrivare accanto
alle fiancate delle navi.
Grazie a questa scelta economica

pedestrian paths, but while
we’re at it, tells also tell a bit of

railroads, which physically united
Italy, to the great joy of Ligurians
who loaded up their bicycles put
them on the trains, and finally
reached with ease the northern
plains with samples of olive oil to
sell in their baskets.
The relationship between the
railroad and the bicycle began a
century and half ago, but the later
boom in tourism then forgot both.
How ugly are those tracks which
cut the coast right at beach level;
how noisy are the trains which pass
under your house when you are on
vacation. And yet, even that track
served vital economic needs: the
railroad had to run close to the
ports, be they commercial or
military. The train cars needed to
come alongside the ships.
Now thanks to that economic
decision, Liguria can boast of some

Certo che gli eredi dei viaggiatori
treno-bici, sono anche eredi
di intellettuali come Italo Calvino,
che sapevano vedere la bellezza
e denunciare le brutture
(penso alla chiusa del Barone
rampante, con le piante che,
scomparso Cosimo, si ritirano in
montagna oppure al racconto La
speculazione edilizia) e hanno
sviluppato una coscienza ecologica:
la Regione Liguria è tra le
poche attente all’ecoturismo,
tanto che un territorio così esiguo,
può vantare la bellezza di
70 km di piste ciclabili e prevede
di arrivare a quasi mille, la metà

the greenery, a stone’s throw from
the sea, they pass through the
most fascinating of historic old
towns on the Riviera. The trains
now run closer to the mountains –
though not all, yet – and the
tracks that they left have become
cycle paths in the western reaches,
and also in Varazze, Arenzano,
Lavagna, and Levanto.
Certainly the heirs of those
voyagers in train and bicycle, are
also the heirs of intellectuals such
as Italo Calvino, who knew how to
see beauty and denounce ugliness
(I’m thinking of the locks, in
“Barone Rampante”, with the
plants which, once Cosimo dies, go
back up into the mountains; or the
tale, “La Speculazione Edilizia”) and
have developed an ecological
conscience. The Region of Liguria is
one of the few which pays
attention to eco-tourism. So much
so that a territory with so little
