mostra in tre atti - una delle
iniziative artistiche più attese
dell’anno della cultura italiana
negli Stati Uniti - che la
Wolfsonian di Miami Beach
allestirà a partire da agosto in
Florida. Dedicata al culto della
romanità in Italia negli anni Venti
e Trenta, The Rebirth of Rome
sarà articolata in tre mostre legate
tra loro, ognuna focalizzata su un
diverso aspetto creativo della
tensione tra classicismo e
modernismo nell’Italia tra le due
guerre. La prima, Interwar Italian
Design, è in programma dal 16
agosto al 9 febbraio 2014, la
seconda – Rendering War,
incentrata sulle opere che Antonio
Giuseppe Santagata realizzò per i
murali della Casa Madre dei
Mutilati di Roma dell’architetto
Marcello Piacentini, alcuni di
queste provenienti dalla
Wolfsoniana di Genova – dal 25
ottobre al 9 febbraio prossimi, e
l’ultima – Birth of Rome – dal 22
novembre al 31 agosto.
Fondato nel 1986 a Miami per
esporre e conservare la collezione
di arte decorativa e di propaganda
di Micky Wolfson, The Wolfsonian
è oggi un museo, una biblioteca e
un centro di ricerca di più di 5
mila metri quadrati e sette piani,
ospitato in un bell’edificio in stile
revival moresco-mediterraneo del
1927, nel distretto déco di Miami
Beach. Oltre 120 mila pezzi tra
mobili, oggetti di design, disegni,
dipinti, vetri e ceramiche del
periodo tra il 1885 e il 1945,
grazie alla donazione dello stesso
Wolfson, dal 1997 la collezione fa
parte della Florida International
University (FIU).
Attraverso una serie di mostre
tematiche, i curatori del museo in
questi anni hanno esplorato il
ruolo del design e delle arti
applicate da molteplici punti di
vista, ma soprattutto in rapporto
alla storia sociale, politica,
economica e anche tecnica della
modernità. La mostra del prossimo

Da agosto nel museo che prende il nome di Micky Wolfson saranno ospitate tre mostre dedicate
al culto della romanità in Italia negli anni Venti e Trenta, dal titolo “Rebirth of Rome”, con pezzi
provenienti anche dalla Wolfsoniana di Genova
The museum named after Micky Wolfson will be exhibiting three
shows dedicated to the cult of the Romans in Italy during the
twenties and thirties, entitled “Rebirth of Rome”. Some of the
pieces on display will be coming from its Genoese sister museum

collection owned by Micky Wolfson,
The Wolfsonian today is a museum,
a library, and a research center that
covers over 5,000 square meters
and seven floors in a beautiful
Mediterranean-Moorish revivalstyle
building dating to 1927, in the
Déco district of Miami Beach. Since
1997, thanks to a donation from
Wolfson himself, it is part of Florida
International University (FIU).
The museum’s mission, under
director Cathy Leff is clear: “To
illustrate the persuasive power of
art and design”. The collection
includes around 120,000 pieces,
between furniture, design objects,
drawings, paintings, glass, ceramics,
books, textiles, and medals from the
period between 1885 and 1945.
Wolfsoniana
autunno, organizzata all’interno
delle celebrazioni per l’anno della
cultura italiana negli Stati Uniti,
continua ad approfondire questo
ambito di ricerca. Silvia Barisione,
ora curatrice del museo di Miami
dopo molti anni trascorsi a
prendersi cura della “sorella”
italiana, la Wolfsoniana di Genova,
assicura che la mostra proporrà
«una nuova prospettiva storica e
visuale di uno degli aspetti più
controversi dell’iconografia del
fascismo», facendoci scoprire
molte sfaccettature e
contraddizioni del periodo. «In
realtà molti degli artisti e degli
architetti del percorso espositivo si
ritagliavano una personale
autonomia che esprimeva notevoli
intuizioni sulla modernità, pur
all’interno di un’adesione allo
stile».
Through a series of shows on theme,
the curators at the museum in
recent years have explored the role
of design and the applied arts from
multiple points of view, focusing
above all on their relationship with
social, political, and economic
history along with techniques of
modernization. The coming show in
fall, organized around the
celebrations for the Year of Italian
Culture in the United States, will
continue to deepen the research on
this theme. Called the “Rebirth of
Rome” and dedicated to the cult of
Rome during the twenties and
thirties in Italy, it will be articulated
into three shows that will follow a
common thread, each one focusing
on a different creative aspect of the
tension between classicism and
modernism in Italy between the two
World Wars.
Silvia Barisione, the present curator
of the museum in Miami – after
many years spent running its Italian
sister museum, the Wolfsoniana in
Genoa – assures us that the show
will propose, “a new historic and
visual prospective of one of the
most controversial aspects of the
iconography of fascism” destined to
having us discover the many facets
and contradictions of the period.
“In truth many of the artists and
architects of the exhibition’s route
cut out a place for themselves, for
their ‘personal autonomy’, which
expressed notable intuition with
respect to modernity, even though
it occurred inside an adhesion to
the style”, continues Barisione. One
of the three shows of the exhibition
will be centered on the cartoons
done by Antonio Giuseppe
Santagata, artist of the 1900s, for
the murals of the Casa Madre dei
Mutilati di Roma designed by
architect, Marcello Piacentini. Some
of these works come straight out of
the Wolfsoniana in Genoa.
