L’autore delle “Lezioni americane” era stato sedotto dalla “spettacolarità” di New York dove gli piaceva girovagare
nel quartiere di Manhattan. Le “lezioni”, che avrebbe dovuto tenere all’Università di Harvard. Ne ha scritte cinque
e sono profetiche proposte per il nuovo millennio
The author of “American Lessons” was seduced by the “spectacular nature” of New York where he enjoyed
wandering through Manhattan. The “lessons”, which were to be a series of lectures at Harvard, were never

Èstato sedotto dall’America e
da New York, “la più
spettacolare visione che sia data
di vedere su questa terra” e,
girovagando per le strade del
Greenwich Village, si sentiva
newyorkese. Un filo sottile lega
New York a Sanremo, la città
dove Calvino è cresciuto.
“Sanremo continua a saltar
fuori nei miei libri, nei più vari
scorci e prospettive, soprattutto
vista dall’alto, ed è soprattutto
presente in molte delle città
invisibili”, così disse
Calvino in un’intervista
rilasciata alla critica
letteraria Maria
Corti. New York,
invece, è “città
geometrica,
cristallina, senza
passato, senza
profondità,
apparentemente
senza segreti”.
Alla cittadina
ligure è legato il
ricordo degli
affetti familiari,
di un paesaggio
stratificato e
America, and especially New
York, “seduced” him. “The
most spectacular vision ever seen
on this Earth”, he described it.
And as he wandered the streets of
Greenwich Village, he felt himself
to be a New Yorker. A subtle
thread connects New York to
Sanremo, the city where Calvino
grew up. “Sanremo continues to
jump out of my books, in its
various views and perspectives,
above all seen from above. And it
is very present in the many
invisible cities,” thus spoke
Calvino in a interview with the
literary critic, Maria Corti. New
York, instead is a “geometric city,
crystalline, without a past,
without depth, apparently
without secrets”. He is tied to his
hometown on the Riviera by
family feelings, in a landscape
that is layered, and unique in its
kind. His ties to the American
metropolis instead relate to the
sensation of “an extraordinary
energy which you find
immediately in hand, as if you
had always lived there”.
“American Lessons” were
published posthumously in 1988.
This is where the famous Italian
writer launches his six proposals
for the new millennium, that
millennium that we are living
today, now, begun by New York,
as the incredible main character.
On the televisions of the world,
September 11, 2001, was
unico nel suo genere, alla
metropoli americana la
sensazione di “un’energia
straordinaria che ti senti subito
in mano come se ci fossi sempre
vissuto”.
Le Lezioni americane sono state
pubblicate in un libro postumo,
uscito nel 1988, dove lo
scrittore lancia sei proposte
per il prossimo millennio, quel
millennio in cui stiamo vivendo
noi, ora, iniziato con New York
incredibile protagonista. Sulle
televisioni del pianeta, l’11
settembre del 2001, è andata in
onda “la più spettacolare visione
che sia data vedere su questa
terra”, una visione che in questo
caso ci ha restituito una
tragedia epocale. Dalla quale
non ci siamo ancora ripresi.
Simbolicamente ci ha introdotto
in tutto quello che stiamo
vivendo oggi.
Ci è mancata la penna lucida di
Calvino in quel momento, lui
che in quelle lezioni americane
avrebbe voluto parlare
di Leggerezza, Rapidità,
Esattezza, Visibilità,
Molteplicità. A vederle tutte in
fila queste parole oggi, ai tempi
di internet e della
globalizzazione, sembrano più
azzeccate che mai. Le lezioni,
che avrebbe dovuto tenere
nell’anno accademico 1985-86,
erano sei, era riuscito a
scriverne solo cinque. La sesta si
