Nei laboratori di Morego e, in

In the labs in Morego and,

making waves in the world. The
most famous image is that of the
little robot iCub which reproduces
the capabilities of a four-year-old
to see and interact with his
environment and is gifted with a
refined manual ability. This project
as well, financed in part by the
European Union, is characterized
by the collaboration between the
various centers and universities
(both in Italy and in Europe).
Last year IIT announced the
invention of a new superresolution
microscope (called
SW-2PE-STED) which can make an
analysis directly from tissue
possible without the need of a
biopsy. Working on this are four
dedicated young researchers from
the Nanophysics Department
directed by Prof. Alberto Diaspro.
Another project of great utility is
the perfecting of a “nanotech
sponge” able to efficiently clean
up a polluted sea thanks to its
ability to absorb oils while
rejecting water. Directing the
research is Dr. Athanassia
Athanassiou.
And last but not least is a project
with a science-fiction flavor,
financed by the European
Commission, and called
“Plantoid”. Dealing once again
with robots, this time the model
is not us humans, but the
vegetable kingdom. The new
Plantoid robots – as explained by
its head of research, Barbara
Mazzolai, of the IIT in Pisa – are
to develop like plants, with the
ability to put down roots, i.e. an
ability that is penetrative,
explorative, and adaptable. Who
knows, perhaps someday
humanoid robots will be able to
harvest apples and flowers
produced by their planetoid
colleagues. And the world will
finally be able to do without us
poor, simple, and above all
imperfect humans.
Da Savona alla Spezia fiorisce la ricerca ligure
From Savona to La Spezia, Ligurian Research Flourishes
Se l’IIT e il progetto di Parco Scientifico e Tecnologico agli Erzelli
sono il cuore più ricco di potenzialità dell’incontro tra scienza,
nuove tecnologie e produzione in Liguria, va sottolineato come questa
scommessa sia stata ingaggiata con diverse qualificate iniziative in
tutto il territorio regionale. A Savona c’è il Polo di Ricerca e
Innovazione Energia Sostenibile - con Soggetto Gestore IPS -, è stato
costituito nel luglio 2011 e raggruppa complessivamente 38 soggetti
tra imprese e centri di ricerca, inclusi Università di Genova e Consiglio
Nazionale delle Ricerche. Vuole dare impulso alla ricerca -
principalmente applicata e industriale - in materia di energia e
ricondurre a sistema gli investimenti in R&D (ricerca e sviluppo) anche
tramite laboratori e centri di ricerca comuni.
Tra gli altri, alla Spezia è nato nel 2009 il DLTM, il Distretto Ligure
delle Tecnologie Marine, che vede insieme, tra gli altri soggetti,
l’Università di Genova, la Camera di Commercio della Spezia, l’Autorità
Portuale della Spezia, la Regione Liguria con FILSE. Con realtà
produttive importanti come Finmeccanica, Fincantieri, Intermarine,
Termomeccanica e numerose altre imprese. Oggetto del distretto - a
marzo è stato fatto un primo bilancio positivo della sua attività - è lo
sviluppo di tutte le nuove tecnologie che possono aiutare lo sviluppo
del vasto campo dell’economia del mare.
Non solo ricerca, però: a Genova la scienza fa rima anche con turismo.
Nella città che ogni anno ospita uno dei festival della scienza più
importanti d'Europa (il prossimo è in programma dal 23 ottobre al 3
novembre prossimi, info su www.festivalscienza.it), il mese scorso è
stato inaugurato ai Magazzini del Cotone il Wow Science Center: una
cittadella della scienza pensata per ospitare mostre e seminari didattici
interattivi e coinvolgere grandi e piccini (fino a luglio è in mostra Brain
- Il mondo in testa, esposizione dedicata al cervello umano, tutte le

If the IIT and the project for the Scientific and Technological Park at
Erzelli are at the heart of the meeting of science, new technologies and
production in Liguria – with all their rich potential, it must be
underlined how this bet is involving, to differing degrees, initiatives
across the whole of regional territory. We will cite two of them here,
chosen for their particular relevance. Savona now has a Center for
Renewable Energy Research and Innovation with Soggetto Gestore
IPS. Founded in July 2011 the “Polo” brings together 38 companies and
centers of research, including the University of Genoa and the National
Research Council. The Polo’s mission is to give a push to applied and
industrial research regarding energy, and channel R&D investment to
the system, also through laboratories and centers of research held in
common. La Spezia instead, in 2009 created the DLTM, Ligurian
District for Marine Technologies. Among its supporters are the
University of Genoa, the La Spezia Chamber of Commerce, the Port
Authority of La Spezia, and the Regione Liguria with FILSE. Important
industrial members include Finmeccanica, Fincantieri, Intermarine,
Termomeccanica and many other companies. The district’s goal is to
develop all the new technologies that can help advance that vast field
of the economy related to the sea. And in March, its budget was
already positive, a sign of its burgeoning success.
In Genoa last month the Wow Science Center was inaugurated in the
old Cotton Warehouses on the port. This “citadel” of science hosts
interactive educational shows and seminars to involve young and old in
learning about science (info on www.wowscienza.it).
