The Legendary Bookstore
At 261 Columbus Avenue you will
find the City Lights Bookstore.
Inaugurated in 1953 by the poet,
Lawrence Ferlinghetti, one of the
literary exponents of the Beat
Generation, who named his
bookshop for Charlie Chaplin’s City
Lights movie, the shop soon
became a meeting place for Beat
Generation poets and writers. City
Lights is also a famous publisher
who published beatnik writers such
as Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso,
Jack Kerouac, and Ken Kesey.

Upon leaving Favale di Mavaro, the
little town in the mountains
behind Chiavari, the saga of the
Giannini family began: on to San
Francisco and into the world of
high finance. Amedeo Giannini
was the first banker to conceive of
the bank as a means for greater
consumption, a service for all
citizens, making him the father of
the modern bank. He founded the
Bank of Italy in 1906, in the
aftermath of the great earthquake,
and the rest is history: in 1919 he
made it the Bank of America and
Italy, which in 1927 he shortened
to Bank of America. The banker of
the poor and the immigrants went
on to become the banker for all,
rich Yankees included.
Blue de Genes
And jeans, that legendary cloth,
invented in Genoa in the 1700s for
making sails for ships and clothes
for sailors. That fabric then left
Genoa to make a name for itself in
the world, blue jeans, cult object,
symbol of equality and liberty. In
1850 David Stern opened a
company in San Francisco to
import clothing. In 1853 he invited

San Francisco una ditta di importazioni

Levi Strauss ad unirsi negli
affari. Nacque così ufficialmente
la Levi Strauss & Co. I
pantaloni di tela blu, forte e resistente,
erano destinati ai minatori
protagonisti della corsa
all’oro. Nel 1863 furono introdotti
i rivetti di metallo per rafforzare
i punti più deboli. Il
successo ottenuto ha portato la
società a distribuire i suoi famosi
prodotti in tutto il mondo.
In Levi’s Plaza si entra nella
sede della Levi’s Strauss & Co
che ha legato le sue fortune ai
mitici jeans, che qui si possono
anche comprare.
Cioccolata che passione
Ghirardelli Square affacciata sul
Fisherman’s Wharf, era al centro
della fabbrica di cioccolata,
fondata nel 1850 dal Domenico
Ghirardelli, nato a Rapallo
nel 1817. Negli anni successivi,
la costruzione in mattoni rossi,
pregevole esempio di architettura
industriale è stata oggetto
di numerosi rifacimenti e aggiunte.
Alla chiusura della fabbrica,
le strutture furono utilizzate
per la creazione di un
Il Golden Gate e alcune
delle tante tracce di Liguria

Academy of Sciences di

Next to the bookshop is
Vesuvio’s Bar
his Bavarian brother-in-law, Levi
Strauss to join his business. And so,
the official birth of Levi Strauss &
Co. whose heavy canvas trousers
were strong and resistant, perfect
for gold miners during the gold
rush. In 1863 they added metal
rivets to reinforce the weak points.
And the success that they obtained
made the company famous
