lue news the souls of travelers from all over the world. The colored houses of the ancient village still hold each other by the hand, clinging together in a common destiny. An image so loved the world over, that Tripadvisor – the world’s greatest virtual community of travelers, with over 75 million ratings on hotels, restaurants, and other attractions – has been greeting guests and employees at the entrance to its General Headquarters at the Technology Park in Newton, Massachusetts with a huge photograph of Manarola. In the meantime, Vernazza, dominated by its ancient Genoese watchtower, has reopened to tourism. But it has been reborn “green”: a new Vernazza that uses renewable energy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, with longer term plans to totally eliminate waste. In the last year and a half, I have gone back often. Each time I see relentless day by day progress. I hear little complaining [the Genoese are famous for their “mugugno”] but lots of work. Almost all of the trail network has been restored, with special care taken to ensure that the overwhelming beauty and biodiversity of the National Park of the Cinque Terre can be properly admired. As the dynamic Mayor of Vernazza, Vincenzo Resasco, keeps saying, “We are more beautiful than ever,” and it’s true. More beautiful and more sustainable. So much and such important investment has been made for the village to be reborn. Methane gas has reached the houses, and studies to develop new forms of mobility and the use of alternative energy are underway. Rethinking the urban project is Pritzker Prize-winning architect, Richard Rogers – the great friend and partner of native son and fellow Pritzker Prizewinning architect, Renzo Piano – who plans to use only local and natural materials such as stone and wood. Sotto, Richard George Rogers A snapshot by photographer, Luca Zennaro, which became one of the symbolic images of the flood in the Cinque Terre. «Saranno più belle di prima» ha But the Cinque Terre will respect nature even more than before. After the tragedy, to an archaic and deep rooted respect for nature in its power and its glory was added a stubborn desire to not give in. This is the key to understanding this little slice of Liguria, where old people speak two or three foreign languages because they have spent their lives on the great oceanliners to escape the poverty that afflicts this land. You must look first at the people to then see the little villages with different eyes. To understand their battle with capricious nature. Lives that have always been difficult. Human will took them to the crest of the mountains, where pride and fatigue carved out thousands of terraces, held up by stone walls, to magically produce tiny pieces of land. There they planted the olive groves, and the vines to make their excellent D.O.C. wines. Here peasant heroes have bent backs and hardened hands, tenacious over centuries. And today their tenacity has made possible, in just a few months, the return to normality for these villages scourged by the flood. *The author of the article, a true fan of the Cinque Terre, organized in 2011 a lottery to gather funds for the non-profit organization, Onlus Vernazza Futura (Vernazza of the Future).
