Enrico Schiffini – E nei primi anni ’60 producemmo
una cucina interamente in legno pensata
per un luogo dove si faceva da mangiare ma
si poteva anche conversare e ricevere gli amici».
L’azienda spezzina fu tra le prime a interpretare
nella sua linea di produzione la trasformazione
dell’Italia da società agricola a società industriale
con l’emancipazione della
donna, la scomparsa del personale
domestico e un nuovo concetto
dell’abitare.
La Schiffini ha legato il suo successo
alla genialità di Vico Magistretti,
il padre dell’Italian Design
che ha collaborato con
l’azienda spezzina dal 1965 sino
all’anno della sua scomparsa, il
2006. «Lui era un teorico del
Concept Design, dell’idea che
viene prima della forma - spiega
Enrico Schiffini – E diceva che il
design, a differenza della moda,
produce oggetti destinati a durare
nel tempo. Come le nostre
cucine».
Oggi le forme delle cucine escono
prevalentemente dalla matita
di Alfredo Aberli, famoso architetto-designer
svizzero.
Negli States la Schiffini è sbarcata
una quindicina d’anni fa
dopo aver conquistato all’italian
style applicato alle cucine alcuni
autorevoli architetti americani.
Dal 2001 gestisce uno show room
a New York, nel quartiere di
Soho dove sono presenti i maggior
marchi italiani, uno a Chicago
ed ora si appresta ad aprirne
uno anche a Miami.
In America molto spesso gli appartamenti vengono
venduti con la cucina arredata e la Schiffini
ha firmato l’arredo di interi palazzi. Uno di
questi si chiama New Green, è davanti alla Statua
della Libertà e di due appartamenti è proprietario
Leonardo Di Caprio.
«Quello americano è un mercato difficile ma
molto interessante dove si registrano consumi di
qualità molto alta – dice Enrico Schiffini – Un
tempo quella americana era la società dello spreco,
oggi è fortemente aumentata la coscienza
ecologica e le nostre cucine con la più bassa
emissione di formaldeide e i materiali riciclati incontrano
molti consensi».
Schiffini. “And in the early sixties we came up with
a kitchen made totally of wood, to create a place
where you could cook but also receive friends and
chat.” This company from La Spezia then became
one of the first to reflect in its production line the
transformation of Italy from an agricultural society
to one based on industry with women’s lib, the
disappearance of domestic help, and new living
concepts. Schiffini tied its
success to Vico Magistretti’s
genius. The father of Italian
Design, Magistretti began his
collaboration with Schiffini
in 1965, and it only ended
with his death in 2006.
“He was the theoretician of
Concept Design - the idea
that becomes form,” explains
Enrico Schiffini, “and he
would say that design is
different from fashion. It
produces objects that are
made to last over time. Like
our kitchens.”
Today the forms that
Schiffini kitchens take are
mainly the brainchild of
Alfredo Aberli, the famous
Swiss architect-designer.
Schiffini reached the U.S.
around fifteen years ago,
after having won over
several renown American
architects to Italian style
applied to kitchens.
Since 2001 it has been
running a showroom in Soho
in New York where the major
Italian brands are present.
It has another in Chicago and
soon will open one in Miami. In America most
condominiums are sold with their kitchens already
in place, and so, Schiffini has signed off on the
interior design of entire apartment buildings.
One of these is New Green, in front of the Statue
of Liberty, and two of its apartments are owned by
Leonardo Di Caprio.
“The American market is difficult, but very
interesting, where quality consumption is very
high”, says Enrico Schiffini. “America once was
synonymous with wastefulness, but today
ecological conscience is high, and our kitchens
with the lowest amount of formaldehyde
emissions and recycled materials are in great
demand.”
