sofisticata fino al Porto Antico di
Genova ridisegnato da Renzo
Piano. Dalla bellezza selvaggia
delle Cinque Terre al maestro
genovese Fabio Luisi, Principal
Guest Conductor al Metropolitan
di New York, che a maggio
tornerà nella sua città natale, al
Carlo Felice, a dirigere la
Traviata». A parlare è Anna
Maria Saiano, genovese, agente
consolare degli Stati Uniti a
Genova dal 1993, l’anno in cui è
stata aperta l’agenzia consolare.
«Per molti americani il legame
sentimentale con la Liguria è
importante, forte. Ovvio ma
sempre vero: per via del 14
ottobre 1492, il giorno in cui
Colombo ha scoperto le
Americhe. Non per nulla Genova
nel 1797 ebbe la rappresentanza
consolare del neonato stato
americano. E fu una delle prime
città europee». È dunque vero
che Colombo è più amato nelle
Americhe che in Italia «Sì, piace
agli americani perché è un uomo
pragmatico, ma nello stesso
tempo è un visionario, capace di
vedere dove altri non guardano.
A me incanta Colombo e lo
ritraggo sempre con orgoglio
quando sono negli Stati Uniti. Lo
considero una sorta di Ulisse
genovese».
La Saiano si appassiona e trova
altri legami tra noi e gli Stati
Uniti. «Quanti milioni di italiani
sono partiti dai moli genovesi
per andare oltre Atlantico Il

Consular Agent in Genoa since

created. “Many Americans have
sentimental ties with Liguria, ties
which are strong, and important.
Ties to October 12, 1492, when
our Columbus, born in Genoa,
discovered America. This is one of
the reasons why, in 1797, Genoa
was awarded one of the very first
American consulates in Europe.”
And so, is it really true that
Columbus is more loved in
America than in Italy “Yes.
Americans like him because he
was a very practical man, but at

Uniti «La nostra straordinaria
tradizione, certo, ma anche
l’ingegno. Ai visitatori americani
in Liguria piace, ad esempio,
anche conoscere la cantieristica o
incontrare il mondo dello
shipping: una volta che riesco a
comunicare tutto ciò, so che poi
potranno godere meglio anche
dei tanti musei, del pesto, del
monte di Portofino, dell’olio, del
castello De Albertis con la sua
raccolta di oggetti da tutto il
mondo».

Consular agent Saiano is
passionate about the ties that
bind us and the United States.
“How many millions of Italy left
the docks in Genoa seeking a
new world across the Atlantic
The Galata Museum of the Sea
has a permanent exhibition
called, “La Merica!”, which forms
the basis of the MeM – Memory
and Migrations Archives, which
have been put together in
collaboration with the museum
on Ellis Island. And then we have
the Wolfsoniana in Nervi, whose
sister museum is in Miami. Both
offer a fantastic collection of
objects from Italy of the 1900s,
but collected by an American.”
What, for Americans today, is
Italian culture “Our
extraordinary traditions,
certainly, but also our genius.
American visitors to Liguria like,
for example, to learn about our
shipyards or encounter our world
of shipping. Once I manage to
communicate all this, I know
that later they will also get to
enjoy our museums better, along
with pesto, Portofino, olive oil,
and the De Albertis castle
perched above the port in Genoa
with its sea captain owner’s
