In the little work on morals (“Operette morali”) in which Leopardi describes a night dialogue between Christopher Columbus and Gutierrez, on their Caravel, still in search of the New World, the Genoese admiral admits that he is carrying out an undertaking – which may cost him his life, along with that of his companions – on the basis of a “simple speculative opinion”. Scientific discovery starts from a theoretical bet, no matter how much it is corroborated by research, trials, and experiments. I remember when City Hall put me in charge of Promotion for the City of Genoa, upon the suggestion of renown historian, Gabriella Airaldi (who you will also find in this issue of Blue), we put this theme and the words of Leopardi at the base of one of the annual “Columbian Celebrations”. And I wish to give you, dear reader, using Leopardi’s dialogue, an interpretation of Columbus’ character, which reflects the vocation of Genoa and Liguria: openness, courage, and a genius which sustains the ability to discover the new. This is also true for science, and even more so for all human activities, such as production, craftsmanship, cuisine, the culture of hospitality. Blue therefore dedicates this issue to the Year of Italian Culture in America. And it will be “disembarking” in New York and in other places which will be hosting Ligurian initiatives that propose this image. We are living through the dramatic consequences of an epic economic crisis. In our little region we are reacting by seeking new roads. From encounters between science, technology, and industry, to the protection of the environment, the rediscovery of historic and artistic values, and the development of maritime traffic. We like America, and it interests us because Americans have a “can do” attitude – they are decisive when dealing with innovation. So many Ligurians have seen this, as they created banks and companies in the United States. And so many of us have shared American democratic and revolutionary ideals, like those of Mazzini, Garibaldi, and… Abraham Lincoln. It was not a fluke that made the United States open one of its first consulates in Europe right here, in 1797, in Genoa. The voyage, the discovery, and the reciprocal friendship continues. 3
