Per un genovese che ha conquistato
l’East Coast, ce n’è un altro che ha
stregato Hollywood. Ma questa volta
l’Opera non c’entra, almeno non
direttamente. A 56 anni, il grande
tenore Fabio Armiliato (nella foto) si
è scoperto divo del cinema. Merito di
un Woody Allen, che nel 2012 l’ha
voluto nel suo To Rome with love,
dove interpreta la parte
semiautobiografica di un impresario
di pompe funebri dotato di un
talento innato per il canto lirico. Con
un trascurabile inconveniente: riesce
a esibirsi solo sotto la doccia.
Un’interpretazione che gli è valsa una
tardiva celebrità nel tempio
della celluloide, dopo una carriera
trentennale spesa tra i santuari della
lirica mondiale, dalla Scala di Milano
a Buenos Aires, da Vienna a San
Francisco. Insieme a lui, nell’arte e
nella vita, il soprano genovese
Daniela Dessì, che il Teatro Carlo
Felice attende di vedere duettare,
dopo che nel dicembre scorso
Armiliato aveva disertato la Turandot
di Giuliano Montaldo per
un’improvvisa indisposizione.

“conquered” the hearts of the East
Coast, there is another side of him
which has bewitched Hollywood. But
this time Opera has nothing to do
with it, at least not directly. At 56,
the great tenor, Fabio Armiliato
(photo), has found himself turned
into a movie star. And Woody Allen is
to blame. In 2012 he pushed him into
To Rome with Love, having him play
the part of (almost) himself – a
funeral parlor owner with an inborn
talent for opera singing – with just
one little problem, he only performs
in the shower. The part sent Armiliato
into late stardom on the screen, after
a thirty year career in the opera that
ranged from La Scala in Milan, to
Buenos Aires, Vienna, and San
Francisco. Together with him, in art
as in life, is the Genoese soprano,
Daniela Dessì.

Come se ne esce
Modificando la struttura. In Italia, come in Europa, i
teatri dipendono in larghissima parte dalle sovvenzioni
statali, mentre qui negli Stati Uniti si vive soprattutto
sul sostegno dei privati. Basti pensare che
al “Met” la partecipazione statale è inferiore allo
0,5% del totale.
Il modello americano è esportabile anche da noi
In una certa misura sì. Credo che la cultura sia l’anima
di un’azione, perciò spetti allo Stato promuoverla
e finanziarla, incoraggiando, però, i privati a intervenire
attraverso un’adeguata defiscalizzazione,
che in Italia manca completamente.
Dopo Genova, l’Austria, dove “prende i voti” da
direttore.
Per molti anni è stata la mia seconda patria. Di quell’esperienza
ho assimilato alcuni aspetti che ancora
mi porto dietro, come la tenacia, la disciplina, la precisione
e la puntualità. Ma oggi mi sento, in tutto e
per tutto americano.
Che consigli si sente di dare a un giovane che
vuole seguire le sue orme
Gli consiglierei di pensarci bene prima di affrontare
una carriera che richiede enormi sacrifici. Di approfondire
lo studio tecnico e vocale, poiché una tecnica
solida è garanzia di una carriera lunga, di fidarsi
di poche persone e dubitare degli elogi.
Chi è il direttore d’orchestra
Una via di mezzo tra il vigile urbano, il domatore di
animali feroci e l’organizzatore di matrimoni. Allo
stesso tempo guida e compagno degli altri artisti
coinvolti in una performance musicale.
Qual è l’opera decisiva per la sua carriera
Non ce n’è stata solo una, ma almeno tre: il Barbiere
di Siviglia di Rossini, la Tosca di Puccini e, senza
dubbio, il “Ring” wagneriano (L’anello del Nibelungo
ndr).
Lo stesso che dirigerà a Genova a maggio. Emozioni
particolari nel tornare a esibirsi nella sua
città
Tornare a casa è sempre una sensazione speciale.
Adoro Genova e la trovo ad ogni visita più bella e
magica. Di questa città porto con me tantissimi ricordi
legati a luoghi diversi: piazza San Matteo, i vicoli,
il Righi, la periferia, che conserva ancora angoli
nascosti e incantevoli, tra Rivarolo, Certosa e
Cornigliano.
Lei è noto per la sua proverbiale eleganza, anche
durante le prove.
Credo che la cura della propria presentazione sia
fondamentale, anche e soprattutto quando non si
va in scena. È un segno di rispetto nei confronti del
proprio lavoro e dei propri colleghi.

And how can we get out of this situation
By modifying the structure. In Italy, as in the whole of
Europe, theatres depend for the great part on state
funding, while in the United States they are supported
mainly by private contributions. Just think that at the
“Met”, the government contributes less than 0.5
percent of the total.
The American model can work here
To a certain extent, yes. I feel that culture is the soul of
an action, and therefore it is the State’s responsibility to
promote and to finance it, encouraging, however,
private funds by offering them tax benefits, which in
Italy at the moment do not exist.
After Genoa, it is Austria.
For many years Austria has been my second home. From
this experience I have assimilated some aspects which I
still carry inside of me – like tenacity, discipline,
precision, and punctuality. But today I feel fully
American.
What advice would you give a young person who
wishes to follow in your footsteps
I would advise him to think twice before facing a career
which requires such enormous sacrifices. To study indepth
technique and voice, because a solid technique is
the guarantee of a long career. To trust only a few
people, and to be wary of praise as a principle.
Who is the director of an orchestra
An orchestra director is a cross between a policeman, a
lion trainer, and a wedding organizer. And at the same
time he guides and accompanies the artistes who are
involved in a musical performance.
Which has been the most decisive opera for your
career
There hasn’t been just one, but at least three: Rossini’s
Barber of Seville, Puccini’s Tosca, and without a doubt,
Wagner’s “Ring”.
Just like you are going to do in Genoa this May. Do
you feel a special emotion on returning to perform
in your hometown
Coming home is always a special feeling. I adore Genoa,
and I find each visit more magical and beautiful. I take
so many memories with me, tied to so many different
places: Piazza San Matteo, the medieval alleyways in the
old city, Righi, the outskirts, which still conserve hidden
and enchanted corners among Rivarolo, Certosa, and
Cornigliano.
You are famous for your proverbial elegance, even
during rehearsals.
I feel that taking care of the way you present yourself is
fundamental, even and above all when you are not in
the spotlight. It is a sign of respect for your work and
for your colleagues.
