(nato nel 2011) MeM - memoria e migrazioni:
1200 metri quadri, 40 postazioni multimediali e
ligure. Uno spazio importante anche quello
sull’immigrazione straniera in Italia.
americane, italiane e belghe. Le loro domande sono
state messe in rete per interrogare il visitatore
sui temi dell’immigrazione contemporanea.
the archives (begun in 2011) labeled MeM – memory
and migrations, offering 1,200 square meters, 40 multimedia
and interactive workstations to tell how migrations
of people have marked our society. The
exhibits are not just of North America, but also of the
Boca quarter of Buenos Aires and the plantations of
Brazil, main destinations of Ligurian emigration. An
important space is also given to recent foreign immigration
to Italy. This subject, which has never been discussed
before in a permanent cultural institution, is
presented through images and artifacts, among which
is a boat, found on the beaches of Lampedusa, used
by Africans trying to reach Italy.
“The MeM holds Italian emigration archives, enabling
computer research of over two and a half million
names,” explains the director of the Galata Campodonico.
Its database was created in collaboration
with Cisei di Genova, an international studies center
for Italian emigration. “The possibility of putting online
all of the Italian regional structures which collect
data on emigration, is being studied,” he adds, “with
the scope of eventually creating a preferential channel
with the United States.”
The partnership between Genoa and New York has also
brought to life the project, “Navigating Difference”,
which can be seen at the latest MeM multimedia
workstation. This is the result of work done on multicultures
carried out by schools in America, Italy, and
Belgium. Their questions were put online to ask visitors
about themes regarding today’s immigrants. “The
MeM is not just a place where memory is conserved,”
underlines Maria Paola Profumo, the president of
Mu.Ma. the grouping of museums of the sea, “but a
space which helps one to understand the past to face
the present and the future.”
