Garibaldi and emissaries sent by Lincoln begin
intense negotiations to have the Italian lead a
Union Army division, but in the end Garibaldi
refuses, because his heart is in the Italian conflict.
Between 1860 and 1870 circa 12,000 Italians arrive
in the States. Among these are many of Mazzini and
Garibaldi’s supporters. They bring an Italian Legion
to life, along with the Garibaldi Guards, guided by
Alessandro Repetti. At Richmond, Giuseppe Bixio,
brother of the more famous Nino, is present; while
the Confederate Army holds one “Giovan Battista
during the Gold Rush, business both big and small;
bank, mining and maritime activities; politics and a
strong social initiative embedded among Mutual
Help Societies, formed the basis for many a fortune
grown on the spirit of initiative held by exiles who
had been involved in revolutionary activities or
Ligurians who had emigrated at an early age. They
began from the most humiliating of jobs but ended
taking up positions of much importance.
Among the many examples let us recall Domenico
Ghirardelli of Rapallo, founder of the Ghirardelli
Chocolate Company of San Francisco. Also in that
city, Angelo Mangini of Genoa first founded the
“Cronaca Italiana” newspaper and then went on to
create the “Voce del Popolo” for the Italian National
Party, the Partito Nazionale Italiano (publishing
writings by Mazzini, and Garibaldi’s memories,
published in episodes), with a fellow countryman,
Carlo Andrea Dondero of Cicagna.
In 1862 Dondero opened the first Italian printing
press in San Francisco where he printed “The San
Francisco Chronicle” and promoted the first
Chamber of Commerce on the Pacific Coast. Textiles
were developed by Luigi Trabucco of San
Stefano d’Aveto, founded the Columbus Saving and
Loan Society, becoming an important leader in
politics; Giuseppe Cuneo of Favale di Malvaro began
working at age 14 in the mines, before taking them
